CROSSBOLT wrote: Thanks for the tip! I have sent you a regular e-mail but have questions for everyone who has served in this capacity. How much down time is there? Guarding gates for the petro industry seemed to pay well but one could lay to for 2 to 4 months while the next job came up. Is this similar? What is the pay anyway?

I've not known of anyone who has had to sit out and wait for a job to come up. You pretty much go from one job to another unless you ask to take some time off.
Email me privately for pay info.

Richard M. wrote: Hi My first post on this forum.
janree- thanks for the heads up on this opportunity!
my question is why do you need two vehicles?
is it required to use scc survey vehicle,
would it be practical to use vehicle allowance.
I ask this because being single limits my
travel to 1 tow vehicle.
Thanks Richard
Richard,
I think you are a bit confused about what was posted.
We need 2 vehicles because both my husband and I work as full techs at each jobsite. We go out everyday in separate directions, working on separate routes.
SCC does not provide you a vehicle. You must use your own and they give you an hourly vehicle allowance to pay for the use of it.
Periodically you are sent to a job where someone from the local Gas Company escorts you around in one of their vehicles. In these instances, you don't get a vehicle allowance.
If you are the only one working, then the 1 vehicle you tow will be the one you work in.

What exactly does a Gas Line Inspector do? Do you have any input as to where, geographically you work? Generrally how long are you in one place? Can you do this part time or must it be a full time job? Thanks for the information.

A gas line inspector: surveys by walking the gas lines looking for gas leaks. You can always call Gene Booth at 972-529-7679, and he would be able to tell you where they need help now. The length of time varies from each job, the gas company may need you there a month and then again they may only need you there a week. You are asked to work a 40 hour week, you always have the option to be off (say go south for the winter, etc.).

Is time off available if we want/need it? We would like to visit family & friends twice a year. Also, I know a place I'd rather not go back to. Would we be allowed to turn down assignments?

Have a nice day (unless you've made other plans).

shergry answered pretty well but I'll chime in too...
You can ask to go to a certain geographic area but you are not guaranteed to be able to go there.
This is a full time job while you are at the job assignment. You will work a minimum of 40 hours a week. You can take time off if you let them know in advance and many of us take time off between job assignemnts or for the winter.
The time you are in a place changes with each job. There are short, medium, and long term assignments available.
Yes, you can turn down assignments, but you may have to wait for another assignment to come available.
Hope that answers ya'll's questions.

First, I apologize for posting the redundant questions. Usually, I read the thread before I write.
Second, thank you for all the information, especially shergry and janree. We have learned a lot from this thread, and we will be calling Southern Cross as soon as our plans clarify, maybe before. You have been very helpful.

Wow - Thanx to Janree and others for all the good information. I will be sending in my neatly written application shortly. I walk 3+miles every day and love a change of scenery. Now I could get paid for it!! I usually take several solo trips a year while waiting for DW to retire in 3 more years and I sub teach in schools; with this program I don't have to jump thru so many hoops to get a job in different locations and I get paid about the same. AND, I don't have to spend the day in a room with a bunch of kids that all know they are smarter then I am. Don't throw me in that briar patch, please!! A big thanx again to all those that provided info about this opportunity.

Good info.
My question is...while you are walking around houses, what do you do to keep you from getting shot by the homeowner.
I can see if you were in a not so desirable location, your life could be in jeopardy.
How do you handle this?

From my understanding of human race, those that party or sell party gifts....sleep between 6 am and noon....go figure that is when you are walking through the houses..!
