We were there in both mid-June, and early October last year. I would highly recommend late September/early October. You take a chance with the weather, but if you hit it right it is terrific, with fall colors, no crowds, and great wildlife. The bull elk were proud of their "harems" and very vocal. Lots of buffalo, and some wolves.
We stayed at Madison CG and Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone. Talk with the rangers about hiking away from the crowds. They sent us to several thermal/geyser areas that we could explore by ourselves.

Going back this September, as last year it was just perfect! Have been there in early May and lots of roads closed, colder, and snowed. Also is habit forming when you watch those fly fishermen in the streams! So if you are a fisherman, bring your gear!

Without question, the middle of September is prime in Yellowstone.

We were there late last September and had a grand time. I think Fishing Bridge closes early in September.

I agree with early to mid September. Crowds are gone and maybe no snow or too cold temperatures. As a resident of WY, foliage is gorgeous.

We were there in late August early Sept. The crowds weren't that large and the weather was good. Only one day with light snow in Yellowstone and another one the day we drove Beartooth Hwy. We saw more wildlife than I have ever seen in one place and we come from an area where the wildlife is fairly plentiful.

We are heading there in the latter part of August 2008 and have already made reservations at Fishing Bridge. I do not know if you have made them or not but it is something to consider if that is indeed where you want to stay.

May and September are both good times to go, and I have been there for both. As stated above, you have some risk of cold nights, but the days are beautiful. Fall is mating time and spring is baby time. Even bison babies are cute. The wildlife is more active in the two "shoulder" seasons when the weather is cooler. In the heat of summer, they stay up in the trees during the day and in the winter they take cover. Also fewer tourists = more campsites. Madison is a good location if you want to dry camp or Grizzly in West Yellowstone is a great full hookup campground about 3 blocks from the west entrance and 14 miles from the grand loop road.
