Full size mattresses are hard to get in campers too. We replaced the thin mattress in our Cougar with a pillow top and extended the platform. The biggest problem I had was getting the larger, (and thicker) mattress in the camper!
If you don't extend the platform the mattress will sag and you won't get the full benefit of the extra length.
We are wanting to replace for comfort reasons. I need a firm mattress. I think we might use the suggestion of having one made to fit. My understanding from what all of you have posted is that it is better to go to a mattress company than back to the RV manufacturer if we are wanting a good mattress. I guess we will check into that. Thanks for your suggestions.
I purchased a foam mattress for my Lance about a month ago. I have camped twice, but have spent eight nights on it in July, in the driveway at home, mostly due to my daughter and her friends having summer sleepovers. Anyway the mattress came to me on UPS all rolled up and was easy to put in the TC and unroll on the bunk. I bought the twin size but they also have RV sized queen and larger. The price was reasonable and no shipping charge. www.wallacesalesinc.com
We had the short queen on our Jayco so I extended the platform by 6 inches with 1/2" plywood and bought an 8 inch thick memeory foam mattress that is available at Walmart and comes vacuum sealed and rolled up in a cardboard box. Once you break the vacuum seal, the foam expands to the full 8" thickness. I cannot attest to the quality of sleep on it, because unfortunately, we haven't had the chance to camp since bying it. It seems very comfortable though and the extra length is welcome indeed.
We recently traded in the Cougar without a b/r slide for a Copper Canyon that has a b/r slide. The Copper Canyon came with a king bed. We wife and I sleep on a queen at home. I couldn't help thinking about all that room that was going to waste.
Since we had just finished extensive remodeling in our home I was still highly motivated. So I took out the king mattress, completely disassembled the king frame and replaced it with a queen frame. And then we put the queen mattress we had bought for the Cougar in there.
Now we have a nice queen mattress that has an exact match support. PLUS we have an additional 10 inches around the bed for my big feet!!!! You cannot tell it's not straight from the factory.
BTW. When I took the king frame apart I was appalled at the shoddy construction. I couldn't figure why it didn't collapse in the middle. I know for sure it won't now.
