Not sure I understand why scissor steps would be more prone to falling.Unless they are installed wrong or not extended properly, a step is a step, people fall down house steps as well, or porch steps, it usually has the cause being inatention, or attention being used by other object, ie a bikini walking by.I am sure your friend can find a lawyer and make a case.

We have a single flip down step on our Fleetwood. While camping at Big Basin Redwood SP in March this year I took a header coming down the steps.
Hit my head on the 6x6 posts that they block the drive into the camping area with. Luckily I wasn't badly hurt but left a cut and an egg on the side of the temple.
Like has been pointed out, most accidents can be traced to our use of the steps. However, the biggest problem with these steps is that they are shallow and generally steep with slippery edges. If would be nice to have a deeper tread with non-skid that covers the entire surface and wraps around the face.
As for a grab rail. I was going to mount a folding rail but it wouldn't work on my unit. Found a Stainless Steel safety rail like they use in restrooms as grab rails that I mounted next to the door. Its long enough to make it comfortable to grab from ground level. The diameter is a little larger than the normal 1" rails and the SS design looks like it was meant to be there from the factory.

I have aluminum scissors steps, and a titanium plate. Steps are on back of camper, plate, screws, etc. are in my neck, and the good Doctor said "Do Not Fall Down!!!". So, I go down down the steps backwards, good solid grip on the safety handle, and get my feet on the ground before letting go. Once upon a time I would zip down the steps forward without a care, but I was younger than and did not take so long to heal! Now if he had only told me not to stand up under the slideout after checking the tires................

Recently somebody posted a picture of a grab bar (kind of a stick coming out) they made that was attached to either their ladder or a folding grab bar. Can somebody recall that post? Thanks.

It may have been me.

It was made from one inch aluminum tube and affixed with hose clamps. I covered it with foam wrap that I bought at a bicycle shop.
It allows old geezers like us to hold on all the way down and up.

We have two 5-step models by different manufacturers ... we use the wider one at home and take the narrower one on the road (as the latter version neatly nests sideways right behind the closed rear door of our TC). So far neither my wife or I have fallen off of either. However, we realize the potential for this, have talked about it on occasion, and try our best to be careful.

I took some short (half inch) self-tapping hex head screws and drove a bunch into the aluminum scissor steps...especially a few on the roll-edge so I have some grippies to keep me from sailing off on wet days. I did that on the roll edge of my snowmobile on one inch centers and they were great for holding boots on those powder slaloming days. George

I haven't fallen, and as often as these threads appear raising concerns in my mind, I may always be careful enough in the future to keep the good streak going.

I looked at mine today, they are bolted together with double bars everywhere, reducing the flex. They have two raised patterned sections cast into the steps surfaces (all six). I may have room to stick traction tape on the outer surface as additional security.

The fact that the steps adapt to varying heights, also allows one to set them up with the step surfaces off-the-level quite a bit. This is probably a contributor to the falls folks have suffered.

I do like mine, they hang off the back just fine, and the only hassle is holding them up to access the storage compartment door underneath the main door. They readily clear the receiver rack I use to carry firewood, too.

BINGO, and in only 7 hours. Thanks, Clattertruck. BTW, it looks like you have a folding mounted handle, but I'm not sure where it folds into. It looks like it may hit your ladder, or, maybe you never fold it in? I was looking at the back of the Northstar and wondering how you would mount a folding handle, one side is the ladder, and the other is the toilet cassette opening. You folks on this forum have convinced me to go with a long bed truck, so I will have to have the scissor steps.

I like the Northern-Lite bumper and step I've seen pics of here on this site .Anyone seen any good step or rear porch ?
