We had a flat on I80 - south side of Chicago. Driver side tire. I use 2X8s each 12" long to level the 5er side to side. Made a ramp, drove the good tire up the ramp. 5er was very stable. Had the tire changed in about 1/2 hour. No need for any jacks.

For a lot of us it's no big deal, I use a 12 or 15 ton jack which is very inexpensive. I'm usually on my way in 10-15 minutes.

If you're not comfortable doing it, don't. Especially on the drivers side tires, it is a risky operation & isn't for everyone. I always wonder how alert the drivers are as they whizz past a few feet away. I wonder how many are on a pain medication or have been thinking it's time for a nap.

I wonder if the smart guy lets someone else take the risk.

Just use Godd SA,s they excellent and will be able to handle your needs. Why risk dieing on the road for a tire?

I certainly agree with avoiding the risk but GS ERS was very unreliable for us. We cancelled and went with Coach.Net.

I have changed a tire on the side of the road and a trip to our campground. I always carry a floor jack along with a toolbox. Luckly the road was not busy and it took me about 20 minutes to change. The hardest part was jacking the trailer up with a small 2x4 umder the axle closet to the flat tire. Do not forget to block your wheels. Brother inlaw had a blow out on I65 near Nashville in the middle of the night and he related to me how much of a nightmare it was to change a tire with tractor trailers and cars and trucks zooming by at 70 mph. Bottom line be careful.

I carry 2 six ton bottle jacks.Have changed at least 8 tires total on roadside.Use 1 jack and blocks under frame and other jack under effected axle and raise both together.Taking some weight with frame makes axle jack easier and safer.

Everyone is talking about these bottle jacks. do they have enough lift height to effectively lift the axel up? obviously the answer is yes if a few of you use them, but from what I have been able to measure, it sure doesn't seem to lift high enough. What am I screwing up in my measurements???

thanks.

Espee:

We tow a fifth wheel. We use CAA RV Plus and have been very satisfied. They did send two tow vehicles for us when we had a breakdown with the truck. Have had several flat tires and they have responded quickly. The way to go as far as we are concerned.

I also have a wimpy 6 ton bottle jack and I can lift my entire 5th wheel off the ground if I choose to do so as long as it is hooked to the truck.

I have lifted one side completely off the ground to change suspension components.

I've changed two tires in my driveway. I run one tire up on a ramp made out of my leveling blocks and jack the other tire up with a 2 1/2 ton floor jack I carry in my truck tool box. Works for me. If I have to change one out on the road I have two sets of those safety triangles truckers use to move traffic out a safe distance.
