On our way to Bar Harbor last week, we stopped overnight at a campground, didn’t unhitch, and didn’t level up (first mistake). Next morning, the light on our Norcold frig was staying lit for about 3 seconds, then blinking 5 times, and the frig didn’t seem to be as cold as it should have been. Instead of reading the manual (second mistake), we just turned the frig off, and then back on again (third mistake). The light continued to stay lit for 3 seconds then blink 5 times.
When we got to Maine, the frig was definitely not working at all on either gas or electric. We finially read the manual and found out that we had wasted our one chance to reset the frig ourselves, now we needed a tech. We couldn’t get through to service until the next day, and the service guy told us what we did wrong and how to fix it. Here’s the scoop.
When the frig is not level and you are standing still, it senses that it is not cooling properly and shuts itself down to protect its internal parts. You can do a reset of this shutdown circuitry “one time” without a tech by shutting the unit off, then back on again. Of course, you have to be on level ground when you do that or it will just sense the same problem and do a “hard” shutdown to protect itself from a more serious problem. You’ve had you “one time” chance, now you have to call a service tech.
The “hard” reset is pretty easy to do, once you know how!
This is what worked for my frig, I don’t know about yours, so do this at your own risk! Turn off the refrigerator from inside your RV. Open up the outside panel. Unplug the 110 volt electric cable and unplug the wire that is at the lower right side of the circuit board cover panel. Then use a socket to unscrew the cover and pull it out of the way. Do not plug in the 110 volt line, but do plug the other wire back in. Turn the frig back on.
At the bottom of the circuit board, near the left hand side, there is a 16 pin connector, 8 pins on top, and 8 on the bottom. The second pin from the left on the top row is pin 15. Cut a piece of shielded wire about 8 inches long to use as a jumper. Push the jumper into pin 15 and hold the other end on the screw that you will see near the lower right side of the circuit board. This will connect pin 15 to ground. In a few seconds, 5 or less, you will hear a click coming from the circuit board, then remove the jumper. Check that the light is no longer blinking on the frig, then turn the frig back off, pull the wire off the lower right hand side of the board so you can replace the cover. Plug everything back in and turn on the frig again. It should be working fine now. The tech did tell me that once in a while you have to repeat the process a second time. It worked the first time for us.
Hope this helps. We now carry a jumper wire with us.
