Boy Bitten By Shark at Myrtle Beach

Posted: Aug. 19 10:43 p.m.

Myrtle Beach — A 7-year-old boy was bitten in the leg by a shark while swimming just south of Myrtle Beach on Sunday.

The boy was playing in waist-deep water when the shark attacked him, said Sgt. Phillip Kane, a Beach Patrol officer in Myrtle Beach.

Bystanders had already controlled the bleeding by the time medics got to the scene, said Horry County Fire Rescue officials.

The boy underwent emergency surgery to his calf at the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, officers said.

The injury appeared to be non-life-threatening and did not cause any tissue loss, fire officials said.

The attack occurred at Lakewood Campground, between Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach to the south.

There are always sharks there. This summer, They seem to be extra hungry though, as there was an attack on the OBX, then at TopSail, Then at MB, All before the 4th of July, and now this one.
When we were at Lakewood July 20 thru 28, DW and I actually saw one just outside of the breakers. Early Fri morning we were walking, and as always looking to see if there were any Dolpins. Saw what we thought was a Dolpin, But as it wasn't acting very Dolpin like, We ran down the beach to catch up with it. It wasn't in any hurry to get somewhere. Well it wasn't a Dolpin. Appeared to be a Sand Tiger shark. About 8 feet long. Could have been a different kind. AS we aren't experts. But that was my guess. We didn't say anything, because there weren't any swimers in the water around yet. You know they feed early in the morning , and late in the evening.
I know they are always there, because. We have stood on the pier, and watched sharks go after the bait fish being used for Kings, while people were swimming at the other end of the pier. Less than 100 yards away. And we have seem sharks come up beside the tour boat on the inland water way.
So remember. It is their ocean. We are just visitors, or food. Depending on how you look at it.
Personally. If one's gonna bite me. It's gonna need to learn to walk.

Got to thinkin. From the location given in the paper. It sounds more like the attack was in front of Ocean Lakes. Because between Lakewood, and Surfside is Ocean Lakes. Wonder how they manage to keep their name out of the paper when something like this happens. The also managed to keep their name out when the polution story came out. If the water is poulted at LW it is at OL as well.

The article says " at Lakewood, between Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach". Not everything is a conspiracy.

I live in the MB area....

This summer when fishing we've caught a substantial amount of sharks in the jetty and off of Huntington Beach State Park... Largest was around 4 foot and the smallest about 12"... I should note that many of these were caught about 100 yards off of the beach..

I urge caution when swimming.... not only caution due to sharks, but caution due to rip tides...
