I have been at Ocean Lakes since March and use to live here. This year there have been fewer times the lifeguards have had to alert people to get out of the water due to sightings than I have witnessed in the past. But, yes, if you go into the ocean, there are dangers. Many sharks will come up very close to shore. When living here, we saw one in the shallow area about 4ft from the shore. It was in Sept but after Labor Day. Since there were no lifeguards, we started alerting people that were in the water to get out. Actually I have seen more people getting first aid this year due to jellyfish bites. As far as the location of this attack, twice on the news it was at Lakewood and once it was at Ocean Lakes. I did not get to the beach Sunday or today but tomorrow I was going to ask the lifeguard where it was. We haven't heard anything here in OL indicating it was here.
I've caught some big fish close to the shore. Sharks included. I won't go in over ankle deep. DW makes fun of me. Sharks, blue fish, flounder all have sharp teeth. Sting rays and jelly fish can hurt also. But as many people as are in the water at MB on Labor Day, I am sure that there are better tasting people than me there. Plenty to choose from. Can you say "Tourist Buffet"?

I camp at several State parks along the coast of S.C. and surf fish when I'm there. You would be surprised at the diferent fish types I catch in knee deep or less depth. Skates, sting rays, shark and catfish are a few. I don't wade in the water any more. My luck I would step on one of these and get finned or stung. A skate is ugly enough, just looking at it causes pain.
