I've been thinking about towing a jeep behind the TC for cruising around camp. My truck is a '97 3500 DRW with airbags, and sway bar. The camper is a '90 vacationer, probably a 11.5 that weighs a lot (??). I have a reese hitch (rated at 10K with 1200lb tongue), and a 36" extension (rated at 5K with a 500lb tongue). The main hitch receiver is larger size than normal, but is normal size on the end of the extension. I would add some sort of braking system to the jeep when towing. I'll be flat towing it also. Has anybody done something similar? I'm not sure on my weights, but am probably overweight by a fair bit.
I don't think "pulling" a Jeep will cause you any grief. I pull a Jeep Wrangler with my set up and my set up is a 2000 F-250 and a 33' 5th wheel.

You talking about a Jeep Wrangler? If so you wont have any problems with weight, growing up with friends in the late 60s that had Ford 3/4 tons with 11 ft campers, pulled jeeps with no problems and none used any braking systems...though I would recommend a good braking systems for emergencies.

I towed my 2002 Wrangler several times before I sold it. Several hundred miles in Wyoming and Colorado up and down passes. Had no problems but I did notice some fading on the brakes coming down passes. That tow bar with a braking system looks like cheap insurance to me.
I had nothing but woe flat towing my heavy Jeep. It weighs close to 5000 lbs. Two near catastrophic incidents. I do have a SB truck. That didn't help. Allot of the control loss was due to those 37x13.50 tires on steel wheels. What's that? 500 lbs of wheels and tires?
The tail just wagged the dog a little too much.
I now tow the Jeep on a car hauler (see sig). Much better. Mostly for the brakes and superior control and handling.

I tow my Jeep Wrangler pickup (I know, they didn't build a pickup, it is a custom job) behind my truck/camper regularly. Let's see...once to Deadwood and back, once to Moab and back, once to Hungry Horse Reservoir and back, several local trips, I guess we could say several thousand miles with no problems. My hitch extension is 41 inches, secured to the camper bumper and guyed with chains to the truck bumper.
I agree with the car trailer, though. one of these days, I gonna get one!
