my nephew had a hampton bay brand ceiling fan (from home depot) that hummed and spun slowly on all three speed settings.
home depot replaced the fan with new one, which upon installation, does the very same thing!
the thing is, this same model fan in his sister's room accross the hallway works fine!

the fan is wired for seperate wall switches for the fan and the lights, and does not seem to be under-volting, that is, the lights don't dim when the fan is switched on, etc.

could we have overlooked something simple, or is possible to have gotten two bad fans in a row?

thanks for your help.

Expose the wiring and touch your tongue to it. If it knocks you on your arse, the voltage is sufficient!

thanks george. I already suggested that to by brother in law, but I think he's going to call an electrician instead.

seriously though, I am so impressed with the info and willingness to help on this forum that I tend to come here first for help with about anything.

guess I was just hoping for a simple "you must have crossed the green wire with the flux capacitor" type of thing.

anyway, thanks to all for your time.

Along with the 'tongue method' you could always use the 'testicle method' If it hurts really bad the power is fine. Sorry, just messing around

I'd be testing the line and everything on the circuit with a volt/amp meter as a start. Good luck

My first guess would be, that the fan motor and lights are wired in the row.
Than it might be wires pushed into the rotor,or factory defect.
