I would have made the low offer and let them decide. When we do a yard sale, my goal is getting rid of the stuff. My rule is prtty much that once it hits the yard sale table, it isn't coming back in the house. After the sale, the servicable stuff goes to Goodwill and the rest goes to the dump. I will occasionally have something that I decided ahead of time will either sell at the price set or will return to the house, but most items are priced to sell. We actually had a lady tell us that she thought we should have priced our stuff higher.

At the last yard sale I had, I had several ladies come back a second time. There was only 1 other sale going on in our little town at the same time. I had every thing priced to sale. I did not want to take one thing back into the house. In the early afternoon, a couple of ladies come by and was just walking around looking at the prices. I heard one of them say " Looks like we had better go lower our prices, or we are not going to sell a thing."
One of the ladies that had come back a second time, told me she had told them, she was going to go back to the cheap sale, to spend the rest of her money.
I would have made an offer at what I wanted to pay, if they take it ok, if not, I am on my way to the next sale.

My Dad always told me:
If they are asking $10.00
they really want $8.00
But will take $6.00
It's only worth $4.00
so offer them $2.00

This discussion shows how different things can be in different parts of the country..
Back in the Carolinas when we had yard sales or flea markets, there were no prices put on anything..
When a person saw something they liked, they made an offer... then it was up to the seller to say yea or nay... and normally they agreed on a price somewhere between..
That was the fun of yard sales and flea markets.. The customer went away feeling like he got a good deal and the seller usually got what he had wanted in the first place..
Different areas... Different ideas

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved.
The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.

That's what I'd have done as well....Minding ones own business seems to be a lost art in this country anymore.....at all levels of society..

Interesting...from the first pages of this thread, I have had the following quotes running through my head: "No man is an island, entire unto itself...." and "Am I my brother's keeper?"
Sure, minding one's own business is appropriate in many areas.
However, to do so automatically with no real thought, is not always a good thing, either.
There have been more times in my life where I wished I had reached out a bit than times where I was sorry I did.

I had a garage sale once everything marked cheap only a few things higher than 10.00 most was under 5.00 alot a 1.00 or under and I still had people saying I was too high. Would you belive people would ask for a nickle off something marked .50. Now I just box up the junk I don't want any more and give it a church run resale shop now.

How about a little fishing expedition to see if they are receptive to some constructive criticism? A little small talk and then either mind your own business or lay it on them.

Didn't say I did it automatically....I have plenty of thoughts when I witness particular things...I'm just saying that upon witnessing these things that many times "Discretion is the better part of valor".
In my opinion this is one of those times that I need to heed my own advice.....please disregard my original post.

Remember
"One man's trash is another's treasure"
Perhaps they believed that what they were selling was "treasure"....
