I'm the other poster that used the champion 3500/4000watt rv ready generator from Kragen while staying at Infineon. My fridge decided to stop running on propane once we reached Infineon so I had to use my champion for 14 hours a day for 4 days straight to save 5 days worth of food and beer. It never hiccuped and was quiet enough that the neighbor who was sitting less than 20 feet from the generator wasn't bothered by it. He said he couldn't hear it. I ran my AC, the reefer, converter and MW at the same time without any problems. The champion was the best choice for me and my uses. If I could justify spending close to $2000.00 for a honda or yamaha inverter genset I would. I can't so I didn't. IMO I made a extremely wise decision.

"If you have ever been to a NASCAR race, you would know that isn't the place to expect peace and quiet."
I've been too Many races, and believe it or not, at Dover, I once had some people complain about my generator.....at 9 pm,to which I replied that if they came to a NASCAR race to sleep, they should have stayed home,& watched it on TV.

Thank you everyone we went and bought the Champion last night it seem well worth the money. I am another one that just can't justify spending $2000 dollars on a generator that just seems crazy.

bukhrn I agree no one should go to NASCAR if they plan on sleeping they should just stay home. If anyone complains they can kiss my you know what.

I was camped next to someone that had a Champion at the Sonoma NHRA event and it really was not that noisy. It is certainly much quieter than most contractor type generators. It was louder at 30' than my Honda was at 10' but that was mostly due to the type of noise. The Honda is lower pitched and the Champion has more "clatter" to it's sound.

ALl that said.. The Champion seems to be a very good value for the money, especially for events of this type, and for someone that only uses it occasionally.

My Honda is only 2000W and was more expensive at $850, but it will run my A/C when necessary if nothing else is on, but I rarely need A/C so it is not a big deal. We dry camp most of the time, so we use it for charging bateries and occasional Microwave use. I really appreciate the quiet of the Honda after owning several cheaper, more noisy types.

Each unit has its value and purpose. Different requirements mean different answers.

Happy Camping!

We won't use the generator all that much because when we camp we do go to places with full hook-up. There's normally a lot of use and all the showers between the adults without hookup's wouldn't work. Now once in a great while we will be using the generator. So for once in a great while I don't think $1800 is worth the money to me.

I'm glad to know that the noise isn't that annoying.

It really isn't crazy to pay $1500-$2000 for a generator if:

1) You are using it on almost every RV trip. Honda and Yamaha have demonstrated that they make very dependable units designed to last for years. A setup of 2 2000W Hondas are easier to carry around than the 100# Champion.

2) You are using it in campgrounds. While the noise level of the Champion is acceptable in National Forest campgrounds, they run at the same speed all the time. The Honda/Yamaha inverter generator will idle until power is needed. This makes them a better alternative than the Champion under those conditions.

But for what I needed a generator for, the Champion fit the bill perfectly.

I agree 100% MFinCA. If I would have had the extra money and used a genset a lot, I would have bought one of those red or blue machines instead. But considering I use a genset for one or two races a year and for power outages only, I can't justify the difference between one of those inverter models and the champion. The champion supplies me with the amount of power I need to stay comfortable in all weather conditions for $300.00 It fit my needs and budget perfectly. Obviously, by reading all the posts lately, it fits the needs and budgets of a lot of other RVer's as well. Even our local RV dealers/parts houses are selling the champion now. Of course they want $600.00+ (they have to mark everything up) and are only selling the new electric start model. IMO champion is gaining popularity and it has nothing to do with where it's made and everything to do with a quality genset and phenomenal customer service at a great price.

My knowledge of generators is very limited. I was wondering if you could change or modify the muffler on the champion to quieten (sp) it down to make it less annoying while running it?

I have a champion and ran it in dumont for 2days straight. It was 108 in the shade. Not a problem at all.

We bought the Champion generator this summer. We decided this was the appropriate choice as we will use it very little. It will mostly be used to run the A/C during rest/food stops. It does this job nicely sitting in the pick-up bed.

As far as modifying the muffler, I beleive that would gain you very little. The noise does not seem to come from the exhaust as much as it does from the crankcase. The exhaust itself as I recall was relatively quiet and the muffler is pretty large already.
