I`ve heard that putting mineral oil in the 6volt batteries will keep the battery post cleaner -- Also that CW sells a product called OOB that does the same thing -

Never put mineral oil in the battery. Putting a petrolatum on the battery posts and connectors has some protective value as a coating. I'm not familiar with OOB.

Not fill the battery with oil, but put enough to cover the water --

I've seen a commercial product specially made for this purpose. As I recall, it was basically oil of some type. The bottle said to add a certain amount (small amount) per battery.

Something like THIS STUFF

2007 Dodge/5.9L Cummins 3500 SRW Megacab 4x4/3.73

I read about this in another forum -- I`ve been RV`ing since 1980,& never heard of such thing -- I live in AZ, so battery life is short --Do you put enough oil just to cover the top?

Amazing what some people will fall for. If mineral oil improved battery performance or life why wouldn't the battery manufacturers do it, or recommend it?

Well, I don't have any Waterfront property to sell, however I do use OOB (Original Oil Battery) in all my house batteries. One ounce per cell does the trick.
The batteries I currently have in our RV were installed in 2001, and are still going strong.
The principle of using oil in each cell is twofold. First it prevents the rapid explosion of the sulphuric acid loaded bubbles that rise when the battery is being charged. By doing so, it helps prevent the corrosion from the electrolyte vapors that escape from the vent caps.
The second reason is to coat the plates with the oil in order to prevent them from being exposed to the atmosphere in the event the electrolyte level gets low in a cell.
While there are numbers of RVers who have never heard of this, Thomas Edison was the first to use oil in the telegraph batteries used on the railroads.
I was first exposed to using oil in batteries back in the mid 1950's in the military, where we put oil in large 'station' battery banks utilized in the electronic maintenance shops, and in the telephone central offices.
The only down side to using oil in the batteries is that it prevents you from using a Hydrometer to check the specific gravity of the electrolyte.

Maybe because then they wouldnt sell so many batteries as they would be lasting longer.

A very good question you ask there HWYBNB, A very good question.

And for the OP, Till you can answer it add one and only one thing to your battery.. DISTILLED WATER

The commercial product is pure mineral oil with a dye added. I get mine clear from the pharmacy. We've been using mineral oil in our batteries since 2004. We bought three new 12 volt Interstates in April of 2004 and used mineral oil instead of distilled water to top them off. The MH has either been plugged into 120V or driving down the road since. No corrosion on the terminals and little evaporation. I've added oil mixed with water only once in the last three years. It's gotten to the point where I only check my batteries about once every three months. This really works and the reason that battery companies don't use it is that it costs more than water and it makes the batteries last longer. Edison used pure mineral oil in his batteries. And train stations used mineral oil in their battery banks.
