Nothing better than sitting around a campfire making supper and enjoying all the chit-chat with family and friends while anticipating what your iron will yield. Darn, I'm getting hungry!

I see there are a lot of folks who like the Rome irons. I have one as well and it's ok. However I have five of these Palmer Mfg.
The cast iron STC model of course. Yes, they are about ten dollars more a copy but they are hands down the best cast iron, pie irons made. I suspect these are what you used and enjoyed so much.

Whatever vendor you choose just be sure to stay away from aluminum or teflon coated irons. Enjoy!

ps. Don't forget to make desert!

I used my new Rome last night over charcoal. I coated them with Spry several times per their instructions, but the apple pie filling still ozzed out around the bread, which made kind of a mess. After soaking them in water a while, I was able to clean them and re-coat them with Spry. Where do you store them? How do you keep bugs off them? They seem very greasy. Temporarilly I put them into a paper grocery sack, but am hoping for some better ideas. Thanks.

Try www.pieirons.com web site. I'd agree you should find them at Wal Mart.

We keep our irons in a bag that usually holds a folding camp chair. Had a couple of chairs break over the years and kept the bags. The irons fit pretty well. Under the dinette seems to be the best place in our camper to keep them.

Well don't spray the outside for one and we've been using them for over 30 years and never used any spray. You just butter the bread like you would for a grilled cheese sandwich. After a few uses they'll turn black just like any other cast iron and only need a quick wipe to clean them off. Make sure you clip the clip to hold the handles together.
Damn, now I've got the urge and I'll have to drag them out of the cellar and fire up the gas grill tomorrow and make up a few for lunch in a couple of feet of snow...LOL
