New ball every couple of years is much cheaper than new pair of pant every hooking up.
I did put same "jelly" for 500 miles trip, but never grease my utility, or boat trailer hitch.

I bought my 30' Pioneer 2 weeks ago and they didn't grease anything. They said it was a matter of personal preference. I think you guys are smarter!!

Sooner or later, one usually learns how to avoid getting greaase on the pants. (at leart one would hope so!)
And like a couple of posts suggested, when you do not have a WD hitch (most likely your utility trailer and boat do not) the force on the hitch ball is not that much and you can go for many years without wearing out a coupler or ball. (I also have a boat and a utility trailer and never greased the ball for those either.)
The TT is another situation altogether. Not only does it have a heavier tongue weight to begin with, that WD hitch adds a huge amount of force to the connection. I would be interested to find out just how much that is if anybody here actually knows the answer. I know I destroyed my first hitch ball with the new TT in a very short time by not applying any grease.

How much grease should be used? A thin layer? A dollop?

Metal+Metal=Need grease
Not much but I use some on every thing including boat and utility trailer. I was able to learn 25 years ago that if I don't brush up against the hitch I won't get grease on my pants. I guess some people take longer.

Not too much. you don't want the grease dripping on the ground.
If i grease my ball -I preferr White Lithium grease that comes in spray. Clean, dry grease with good breaking point and not attracting sand.
IMHO investing in stainless steel ball would extend the life if you want to go no-grease route, but never tried this one.
