I can certainly understand additional fees for anyone 'sharing a site' but charging extra for a screen room in an area where bugs are a common problem seems a bit harsh. One more plus for the NPS facilities.

We just stayed in Rodanthe watersport & campground 9/10 -9/13 and checked out both while we were there ocean waves is smaller but nice and clean. It seem like they charge extra for every thing. We stayed in camp hatteras last year. the sound side had paved sites and a newer bathhouse. It is a very large campground with a lot of amenities. both cost about 30.00 to 38.00 a night. If you don't need any extras rodanthe water sport & camp ground is on the sound has water &elec. hook ups takes rigs up to about 25 ft. 25.00 a night. nothing fancy but clean and nice owners . Have fun.
Here we are on site 64 at Camp Hatteras.. on the sound side backing up to the sound:
and here we are on the beach 4 or 5 miles down the island from Camp Hatteras.
We have some more pictures on our website linked in the signature below...look at the menus on the left side of the page called Outer Banks or the Our Dotphoto Site.
Ocean Waves is smaller and much less expensive, and was actually our first choice, but we couldn't get in there so we went to CH. We really enjoyed it there. The soundside is a pretty good hike to the beach, but it was much quieter and less crowded.
Have fun!

Yes, Camp Hatteras has W/E/S/CaTV/WiFi for around $60 per night, Ocean Waves also has W/E/S/CaTV/WiFi for around $30 per night. KOA has all that too I believe but I've never actually stayed there...

We just got back from 7 nights at Hatteras KOA, we completely enjoyed it, even Tropical Storm Gabrielle was interesting and kind of fun. They do have w/e/s/cabtv/wi-fi, cable was $3 a day but wi-fi was free and worked great, so for 7 nights the total was $448 minus the KOA discount of $19.22 = $424.52, the staff is friendly and helpful. I'd stay there again, really enjoyed it.
