There are several of us who have done this. I used an 88-98 GM truck spare tire hoist to put mine under my 21SS HTT and fitted the hoist so it can be cranked with the stabilizer handle. I don't have my Webshots page up and going yet, but if you search you'll find some of the other campers who do. One used a Ford Ranger hoist, but we won't hold it against him!

I did this mod because I added a 60" storage chest off the rear of my HTT to hold my Porta-Chef, MaXX Daddy chairs, and odds-n-ends...

Well here is the update. I finally went ahead a few months back and spent a few hours doing the deed. I'm pretty satisfies with the finished job. As regards clearance, I've not run into any issues yet. I must point out that I did flip my axels a few years back to give me more ground clearance.

Our's came that way from the factory.

Our TT came this way too. It is true that the ground clearance could be an issue. My TT is an ultra-lite (which is already low to the ground) ... with the spare mounted under the front of the A-frame, there is not a lot of room before I would bottom out.

Ours (HR Aluma-Lite) came from the factory like that and below is a pic, sorry for the quality. No issues with clearance, but I would advise using some web type straps to provide a more positive locking mechanism since these spare tire lifting mechanisms have been know to fail and you don't want that TT spare or even worse the one underneath the back of some trucks to get loose and bounce around under that very expensive TT.

Our north trail 31qbs came with the tire mounted under hitch. I put a chain around the frame to hold it up, and I also put a bolt though the lift mechanism so it cannot turn more than a 1/4 turn.Hits the frame arm first no way it will come down.

How it know this can happen is mine got road rash from tire dropping down about 1/2 height. glad i stopped for gas. It could of got ugly had the tire caught the road any more. One major wreck.

MY ADVICE. secure it good. Also no problem for clearance as it only sits down a little bit from jack foot. will tear out jack before bothering tire.
