Is a torque converter, as a pump source, more of a constant head design, or a constant displacement design?

Niether. The torque converter isn't much of a pump at all. It will just circulate fluid within itself. The transmission has a pump inside it that pumps fluid into the torque converter. Without the trans pump little fluid would flow out of the torque converter. The little that would flow would be from cetrifugal head.

Transmission pumps vary. Some are constant displacement, some are varaible displacement. Some have pressure blow offs, some don't.

I have the exact same truck that you have in a dually. I added a Derale tube and fin cooler installed in the return tranny line. This cooler has a built in fan that activates via an in line thermostat. The thermostat is programmed to turn on the fan @ 180 degrees.

I went this route because I wanted the ability to cool at very slow speeds. I've not added the 6.0 cooler. My current temps run around 185-195 while moving in the dead heat of summer here in North Carolina. Stop and go temps were in the 205-210 range until I installed the Derale. Since I installed the Derale, I've never seend over 198 degrees. I have an 18 degree difference in the temp sender unit that's on the output side of the tranny versus the input line that the Derale is located.

I'm going to go to a larger fiver hopefully very soon and I should be able to ascertain the effectiveness of this set-up better. My curernt fiver is only 9,000#. If my current set-up can't handle the larger fiver, then I will add the 6.0 cooler.

I have a 2003 Ford 7.3 PSD, with auto trans, and I see the trans temp gauge in the yellow when pulling my 12000 lb 5'er over 6-8% grades in the mountains. What are my options for increasing cooling for the transmission? I believe there is already a cooler. Can I add another one? What about larger finned aluminum oil pan? Thanks

First off listen when Mark Kovalsky talks transmissions, period. Next go to Click and see what they have to say about your situation. I think you will find that just adding the cooler from a 6.0 instead of the puny OEM one will do what you need done. It(6.0 cooler) is about three times larger than the oem and fits in the same space with only minor changes to the lines. ^.0 cooler has 1/2" and the oem is 3/8". Male and female hose barbed fittings from lows or HD takes care of that problem. It is a do it yourself job, took me about 4 or 5 hours, I'm slow, and with the X there is a couple of things more to remove to do the job.

Good luck,

Does your truck have an exhaust brake? I have an '01 7.3l dully and pull a 31'tt and carry 2 atv's on the bed. My truck has no engine/exhaust brake and it is a white knuckel experience keeping the speed down in the mountains of CO. My trans. also heats up on the downhills. I'm looking at adding an exhaust brake and torque converter control system which I'm told will keep my trans. from slipping and getting hot on the downhills w/ the exhaust brake. Will I get any help on the uphill side?

I don't know much (anything) about diesels, but I'll offer what I know about the tranny cooler I installed on my TV (from previous posts made a LONG time ago):

As my sig shows, I tow with a 6.0L 2500HD. Before I installed my Tru-Cool cooler, my trans temp would hit 230 or so pretty frequently when towing through the Sierra's. I installed the Tru-cool cooler and it made all the difference in the world! Since I installed it, my trans temp hasn't ever gone over 160 -- even when I was going up a steep grade in 1st gear and 4400 RPM for 30 minutes. The tranny cooler reduced the operating temperature by 70 degrees even under extreme conditions!

If a Tru-Cool transmission cooler is made for your truck, I'd certainly recommend at least taking a look at it.

I don't have an exhaust brake. I asked the Ford dealer about it, and they told me it was hard on the engine. I don't know if I believe them or not... I wish I could have more braking after this last trip to Colorado. I burned up the trailer brakes. Some of those mountain passes are really tough!
