About the start of the year, canada customs changed their assessmsent policy on shipped orders, and that is now the standard operating procedure. Anything you purchase now is subject to taxes on the final delivered price. So i imagine ups is also required to collect the taxes on that total as well......................

Very interesting. I can't find anything on the Governments site

I keep finding this:

Inbound international freight
Outside Canada to a place in Canada

Sch. VI, Part VII, s 8

29. The supply of a freight transportation service in respect of tangible personal property from a place outside Canada to a place in Canada is zero-rated. A place outside Canada includes a place in Canada if, at the time of shipment, the goods being transported are held in bond and have not been released by Canada Customs.

sirdrakejr - yes, I'm a Presidents Club member, when you combine that discount and sale prices it's good, but $255.74 in shipping, handling, and fees is still a lot to pay to get $512.85 of merchandise.

Hmmm, i saw the notice they had posted in the local border crossing at each desk, and just took it for granted.

I'll have to look more closely at it the next time i go through, and see if they have a webpage where it was verifiable.

Maybe it's only for the items being physically brought through a land crossing, after being delivered to a depot close to the border.

I'm going across next week to pick up some tools, and i'll check the notice again, then post back.

It would have paid you to get to Burling ton WA - and taken it all home - cheaper, no GST, no brokerage etc and you would have had a nice trip. Victoria to Anacortes as a foot passenger, Taxi or bus to CW at Burlington and back to Anacortes, ferry to Victoria. Nice trip.
JOhn
PS better yet - have CW ship it to you in care of Fidalgo bay RV Park (call them to warn them) in Anacortes. There is a bus to there from the ferry. - Next time.

You're right! Then I could've bought more stuff

Camping World replied promptly to my email: The information you have provided will be forwarded to the department that handles our shipping services for them to review. They also thanked me etc.

Camping World is big enough to work out a better deal with UPS.

thetimberjack - I phoned the GST info line - they didn't know the answer They would have found out but it was taking too long. I said I'd try to find out on the web.

I think I'll ask for two invoices in the future - one for shipping and one for the items purchased.

I always make sure they will ship USPS when ordering from the US. The brokerage fees charged by UPS are astronomical. If they refuse to ship USPS, I don't order from them. Most companies I've spoken with have been obliging. Some say they always ship USPS to Canada because most Canadians request it anyway.

I'm curious. I used to own a business that shipped packages for other people. At least at that time it was a no brainer to use the USPS whenever we shipped to other countries. UPS fees were horrible. Also, USPS had very limited paper work where UPS was a nightmare. If this is still true will Camping World ship by USPS if requested? Or is my info really dated? I've been retired for more years than I want to admit.

In our company we have for years refused to purchase anything shipped by UPS and have a standing order not to use them to ship anything, for reasons you expressed.

My experience with parcels shipped via USPS is that there is no tax on items under $20.00 value on the forms. I have ordered quite a few of these.

On items over $20.00 shipped USPS, Canada Post charges $5.00 to collect the tax.

USPS also changed their rates and methods in May.

Remember there are other camping supply stores than Camping World. One is http://www.rvingoutpost.com

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

If the only option to ship to Canada is UPS I'll not order it. UPS makes most of it's money from Canadinas on their so called fees.

I too have been "hosed" by UPS fees.
On a recent CampingWorld order the delivery guy who delivers for both UPS and Fed-Ex (small, rural area we live in!) said that we should ask Camping World to send stuff by Fed-Ex instead.
The brokerage fee for my $20 order was $39 using UPS!!
The Fed-Ex brokerage fee is $7!
A pretty big difference.

I asked Camping World and they said that they only use UPS. They were very nice however when I explained what this meant to Canadian customers and the manager said that he would pass on my comments.
