Rhonda, we plan on doing the same thing when youngest son graduates HS. Won't be for another 6 years. I am a RN and have 21 years experience in the OR. Hubby works for Chrysler and could do consulting work for them. I haven't looked into the different companies and such alot, but my friend does travel nursing. She has worked in CA a couple of times for 60 dollars a hour, plus housing expenses. She really likes it. I have another friend who has done the travel thing, she has worked in FL and the Virgin Islands for about the same amount per hour with housing paid plus bonuses. Sounds really nice, and a great way to see the country. Keep me posted. I will be right behind you.

Watch the assignments. I had a friend who just went to CA and got a really bad assignment. She went to a small hospital and the other nurses were not nice to her.
I have been in the OR for 25 years. I have worked in 8 different OR's in those 25 years and I have always said that OR nurses are the biggest ... in the world to work with and I still stand by this. After all is said and done, one day , I know I will have to do travel nursing because that is the only way I can make any money.
Good luck. CYA on the road somewhere!

Hello,

I am a registered x-ray tech actually beginning school for an LPN. Are there also travel nurse jobs available for LPNs? I plan on continuing for my RN while on the road through distance learning, (Excelsior?) I have most of my general credits for the Associates for my RN, but don't want to spend the additional year tied to my sticks and bricks. My husband is retired and ready to go..so an additional year for the LPN program was a compromise.

Thanks..

My wife and I are both radiographers and we would love the travel idea. We have no children and are free to go practically anywhere. We live in Florida and would be interested in traveling during our hot season. What it the best way to get started? Should we rent a vehicle first to see if it suits us or just jump in and buy one? We also have several pets that could go along.

Thanks, R and K

Hiya,

You might research the companies that offer travel jobs for x-ray folks. Most of the job listings I've seen for travel radiology jobs are very specialized positions in places that may or may be attractive to you....even temporarily. JMHO

DW is a Travel Nurse. I'm on SSD. We've been doing it since March '07 and are loving it. As I'm disabled, I am the cook, house cleaner, driver, and general slave. Heck I work harder since she went into travel nursing than I did before I became disabled.
Not really. We've had assignments in Arizona, Minnesota, Kansas and Missouri and wish we never left Arizona. She changed to Nurse Choice and we ended up in MN, but the money and Stipend was ridiculously high, (over $7500 month take home). Nurse Choice is a fast response company so we don't know where we will end up until 2-3 weeks before we leave, but using our MH makes that kind of fun.

Hello Stormysmom,

I'd recommend going ahead with your RN before hitting the road. I know one person who did that several years ago and the amount of money difference between an RN and the LPN was substantial. You would also be paying more for the "distance learning" especially if you have to do " clinicals" in an unfamiliar area. What's one more year at the house worth? Just mho.

Rhonda,
I'm getting in on this a little late. If you will go to Delphi Forums you will find loads of information on Travel Nursing and the "Good" and "BAd" travel companies. It is free, you just have to sign in.

Stormys Mom,
You can go here too and find out all the tech trvel positions and nurse positions.

My DH is 65 and ready to hit the road NOW. So the LPN was a trade off. I know there's a huge pay difference between LPN and RN and I will probably apply for both programs since I am unsure. In my area in SW VA. RNs work in hospitals and LPNs work in doctor's offices. I really don't have much desire to go back to a hospital setting again. My preference would be an urgent care setting (that's where I'm working now as a rad tech) or home health care. Of course as I get into it more, that may change.

Thanks for the tip on the Delphi forum. I'll check it out.

Hello fellow nurses
I am an RN have been for over 28 years and was an LPN for 4 years before that. I work in PACU or Recovery Room to some. I decide to travel a little over a year ago. I took positions in Austin Texas, Charlotte NC and Ft Pierce FL. Traveling is not for everyone. Depending what area you work in depends if you can find positions where you want. There are limited positions in PACU. 52 for all 50 states and 3/4 were on the night shift. I am licensed in compact states and Florida so I have 20 some to choose from.
Every position I took I had drug testing and background checks that needed to be done. My 1st travel position I had 8.5 hours and pre-testing to do on the computer before arriving. This was your general orientation. Accucheck certification, fire and safety etc.
I have found for myself doing this every 3 months and having new computer charting, new equipment, new policy and procedures that I need not to be traveling. I loved where we went and being able to see the country.
After a little over 1 year we have parked our RV. I accepted a full-time position at a hospital in Austin Texas and my husband has found work at the campground we are living at. He is a network engineer by trade but as we travel he could not find work. In Florida he applied for over 30 positions and the only job offered to him was BELOW minimum wage at Wal-Mart cleaning bathrooms at night. So we both are happier settled in one spot.
Let me know if I can answer anyone questions
Jackie
