ALL other times the signals gets used.
The trick for changing lanes in Chicago is you have to hit the turn signal the same time you hit the gas while you simultaneously change lanes.
And it's not just Chicago.
I find alot of times on the Interstate, I'll have a nice break in traffic with plenty of room to change lanes. As soon as I signal my intentions, the next car will RACE up as if to block me from coming over, slam on their brakes when they get cut off, and then follow right on my tail, as if their '89 Civic is real intimidating, or something.
Like I read somewhere on here,
"My signal is a statement, not a request."

I figure why bother with the signal. The drivers all around me are too busy talking on their cell phone to pay attention to my signal anyway.

I observe many drivers that do not use turn signals. They're bad enough but the ones that really bug me are those that think that because they signaled they don't have to even look to see if it's safe to turn or change lanes. It seems to them that signaling means, "Get out of my way, I'm turning here!"

>>Mostly it is the older folks who signal, judging that the signals are flashing on Town Cars, big old Buicks, Crown Vics. SUV's, hardly ever, especially if Lexus, BMW or Infiniti; if you're big enough, or paid enough for the car, you don't have to follow the rules?<<
Well, I think that's true to some extent but here in CA maybe 5% of people signal.
I drive expensive German cars, but I always signal so that the other drivers will see that it's the thing to do.
Truly, it aggravates me no end to stop at a 4-way stop and have a car turn without signaling. Arghhhhh.
My other pet peeve are the ones I let into a big lineup without even a nod of thanks! When someone lets me in, I have to restrain myself from jumping out of my car and smiling and bowing.

You expect me to put down my cheeseburger and cell phone just so I can use the turn signals?? I don't think so.

Where we live, and it's not a "planned community", golf carts are our normal mode of transportation about town. As a retired Driver Ed teacher, I always hand signal my intentions. It amazes and amuses me that so many have no idea why I am "pointing up at the sky" or "pointing to the left', etc., and just look puzzled.

Many who do use them wait until after they start their turn. So much for advance warning.
