If you go to Yellowstone I suggest a trip over the Beartooth Highway. On the Montana side just before the switchbacks there are several campgrounds. There is a lions club campground that is free and is a nice clearing in the forest just before these other campgrounds. a lot of them creek side. You can ride from camp and have a choice of a few trails to ride. There are a couple that take the low road and follows the stream where one of them ends at a place where you can hike into Glacier lake. Another takes the high road and eventually ends at a wilderness area. I think one of the roads is called Hell Roaring Plateau. It essentially follows the Beartooth highway switchbacks just on the opposite mountain. Google earth shows it as Forest Route 421. I rode it this past weekend and it had lots of snow on it. You could also camp at the top of the beartooth highway and ride some trails there. I'll post more info later.

I finally got these off my memory card. Here is the campground below the Beartooth Highway switchbacks. Its winter time but you get the idea. There is a stream behind the Raptor.

a few summer pics

I have more pics (camping & riding) of this same area and others that I will post when I find them. When you come out this way you'll have to let me know. Maybe we can meet up. My aunt & uncle own a cabin at Flathead Lake. That area is beautiful and has riding up there.

Couple things come to mind when I think of Montana and driving;
Hells Canyon
Flathead Lake
Going to the Sun Road
Bob Marshall Wilderness
Bitterroot
Beartooth and Chief Joseph and Red Lodge
Big Sky Ski area
Any River or Valley you can drive thru/next to.
If 4wheeling is your thing you might just look at a loop that would take you thru Colorado –the San Juan’s and the Collegiate Peaks come to mind but it is hard not to find some GREAT off road areas all over Colorado.

It’s hard to drive around Colorado and not find a new off road adventure,

Sweet! Thanks guys, hoping we can pull this trip off. Not sure about a Rotarian camping at a Lion's Club campground but what the heck!
WhitehouseLV - that sounds like some great riding... snow would be nice.

We stayed at the Sawtelle Mt Resort in Island Park, ID. There are several trails in the area and you can ride out from the park. It’s about a 30 minute drive from Yellowstone’s West entrance. We didn’t spend much time riding the trails but the park was pretty nice and in a good spot for what we were looking for. It’s also a straight shot down to St Anthony. Now there’s a great place for riding.
