Check the axles. Not the same as the 2500HD Duramax / Allison. The mechanical parts of a 2500HD Diesel are the same as the 3500HD SRW. Not true for the 2500HD gas 6.0 versions. I think the 8.1 gas will get you the heavy axles but not sure. You might be able to order a 6.0 with the diesel axles / rear drive and brakes? Why do you want to know what a 6.0 will tow? Do you already have that truck? Remember the 20% pin weight rule. A 10,000lb 5er would put 2000lbs in your bed. Tex

The axles on the 2500HD are the same regardless of whether you have the Duramax or the 6.0 gas. Everything is the same on the 6.0, 8.1 and Duramax on the 2500HD except for the engine and tranny.
Now, a 2500 has different axles. This is the light duty 3/4 ton (same as the 1500HD), and has semi-floating rear end, typically a 3.73 gear ratio, and was only available with the 6.0 gas. GVWR is 600 pounds less in the 2500 vs the 2500HD.
I have been towing my trailer since new in '02 up and down the passes here in Washington, and have had no problems. My Arctic Fox is probably 9,000 with everything.

2004 2500 HD 6.0 gasser 4WD pulling a 27' Terry Resort, 8600 lbs soaking wet. It takes me all through these West Virginia mountains to any trout stream I can think of but, as stated before, get ready for the sound. You'll think it's coming unglued at first, but the engine is designed to work in the 3200-4000 RPM range. Relax, let the engine and it's computer do their thing, and you'll go anywhere you want.

My trailer's GVWR is 7500lbs. We put quite a bit into it, so its probably near that. TV goes well up hills, can even accelerate. "Screams" occasionally. Been Ottawa-Key West-Chicago-Ottawa, and Ottawa-New Orleans-Tucson-Durango-Chicago-Ottawa plus two trips from Ottawa-Stratford return. About 12,000 miles in total. Goes very well - we love it !
Only problem we had was in Tulsa, when the steering started knocking. Fixed at local Chevy dealer very resonably. Well known problem apparently.
