We have a small ceramic heater and I was wondering if it would be safe to use in our tent. It's electric and we'd only use it in the mornings while we're getting up and dressed. We have hubby's super warm sleeping bags as well as off-the-ground cots with air mattresses for at night.

Thanks!

As long as it's the kind that is cool on the outside and bottom, and as long as it doesn't get tipped over so that the heat is in direct contact with the tent floor or walls, it should be fine.

Should do fine, I would elevate off the floor of the tent. Those heaters throw some heat.

You must have a generator or camp next to a plug? If you are using an invertor be prepared these things pull some juice.

We have a ceramic heater that we use from time to time in our TT. It has a safety feature: if it tips over it shuts off. Works great.

Make sure that you use a quality extension cord rated to pull the amps of your heater.

Why not? Should be ok to use while up getting dressed. i have an old Coleman Focus IV LP heater that we use. It takes the small gas canisters and works great. Wouldn't leave it on at night, but with electric you could as long as you don't know it over.

Thanks for the thumbs up on the heater! We'll have electric hook-ups. I'm not planning on doing any primitive camping anytime soon, if ever! I booked Natchez State Park when it was 85 degrees out. Just took a look at accuweather.com and it's showing lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s for our weekend. BRRRRRRRR! Time to dig out the Cuddleduds. I'm a died-in-the-wool southern girl.

I may need to investigate a porta-pottie and hubby's backpack tent to park it in. We'll have a comfort station but I don't relish the idea of a late night visit in 40 degree weather. At the rate I'm going we're going to have to bring the truck just to haul all of my necessities. Hubby thinks I'm a big ole wussy baby.

Wow, how things have changed. When I was a kid we had a huge canvas cabin tent (the real big heavy ones). We used a kerosene heater in there and never even though twice about it. I don't think we used it overnight at all. We never really heard too much about carbon monoxide poisoning back then. Guess we're all lucky to still be alive.

BTW: I lived in LA. for 2 years (in Houma) and our first winter there it got down to 14 degrees - so much for warm winters.

A good idea for any heater in a Tent is to use a Platform of Plywood & a Piece of 1/2" thick Cement Board for underneath. It doesnt have to be huge, but, If you take a 16 x 16 piece of Plywood and Glue a Piece of Cement board to it, Then drill a few holes and run some wire up through and Attach your heater it will make for a Good Solid Fireproof Base and is less likely to be tipped over.

NEVER Use an LP/ White gas or Kerosene Heater in a tent all night without ALOT of fresh air.

Many years ago We used a Kerosene heater (Kerosun)during hunting season and 20 degree weather In a LARGE Wentzal Cabin Tent with windows fully open and door open partially with heater drawing air from door area. It kept the tent at 65 degrees on LOW Even with the Windows Fully Opened!!

Now we use a small Mr heater. We heat the tent before bed and to take the chill off in the morning...That is all you really need.

I use the Mr. Heater Big Buddy, as seen below.

I use a board from an old computer desk. I can actually fit 3 cots in with the heater but have to monitor the heater. Or I can fit 2 cots in without the threat of something coming in contact with the heater grill.

I called Mr. Heater as to why they state not sleep with the heater on. It has nothing to do with carbon Monoxide as the heater has a detector and shut off if the oxygen falls below normal levels and the heater does have a tip over protection shut off.

The reason they state it shouldn't be used while sleeping is because the front grill gets hot and could pose a fire hazard if something came in contact with it. As long as it's free and clear of anything touching it, we'll sleep with it as Mr. Heater stated the only fear is contact with the front grill and why the warning is in place. You must give it adequate ventilation for carbon monoxide not to take place and to have adequate levels of oxygen in the air. Otherwise the low O2 level detector would shut off the heater.

Have a good one.

Thanks for the replies. I love seeing pictures of everyone's setups! I think we're just going to try the ceramic heater. It stays cool on the exterior and we'll probably only use it for dressing in the mornings. Someone on another board recommended electric mattress pads and I got a couple of those, never even knew such a thing existed! Now if we can just get all of this junk into the car!
