This IS posted in the PET section = Petstop forum,
this is the Petstop forum.

There are several 'sections' of the PETstop, dogs, cats, other animals.
Which allows people to choose to only read about a specific animal if they want.
I simply requested it be posted in the 'general' section of Petstop.
Which basically I probably didn't even have to do.

........

I was about that one, too. I think there was some confusion.....

It was a terrible thing that happened to those poor horses. Unfortunately, there's a lot more abuse to horses going on that the public knows about. Just last week, the owner of the facility where I ride rescued 2 1 year old Belgians who had been dumped in the middle of the road in a rural area not too far from us. I saw both these horses last week and for the most part, they were neglected in their previous life - ribs showing, baby teeth rotted from the wrong food. Both are afraid around humans and have never been socialized. My friend does not know how she is going to train them because they are so fearful. She, by the way, has a great lesson horse whom she rescued from a slaughter house many years ago. He was a former barrel racer and is now a star lesson horse - I've won ribbons on him as have many others. Thank goodness for people like these who rescue horses. They, like our other smaller pets, deserve humane treatment during their lives.

It is very tragic when something like this happens. However, since the closing of horse slaughter houses in the US, there is no where to take unwanted livestock. Yes some think it is cruel but better than they starve from lack of feed or lack of care. We own 16 head of our own and when we need to put one down, the vet comes and the hole is dug. They are a commodity still eaten in Europe. When the US is in war time the price of Horse flesh goes down with lack of transport across the sea to France for example. I wish you could take in all the worlds unwanted but it isn't feasible or economical. Therefore they must go somewhere. The draft horses of Canada where primarily used to produce Primarin for Woman as a hormone replacement, now they are producing a synthetic version and no more need for the horses. Again I say tragic but what else to do?

That 'would' explain the need for this owner to ship them for slaughter. He most likely was in business as a producer for the Primarin farms and that would explain the 2 year olds.
That was what everones question was last night is why all the
2 year olds and why 'all' Belgiums.

I think it was just about 2 years ago that Premarin stopped
production. I know that's when we got involved in the exsisting
mares there. Good observation.

I always did get a kick out of telling women that took
premarin just WHERE the stuff came from. I.E. Pre -MARE- in.
A female horse in estreus! And the part that really gets
them is when I tell them it is derived from the urine of
these horses.
Of course those of us who know, this too was a horrible,
horrible situation for the animals used to make this drug.

See how informative this forum can be?

I just have to ask your reasoning and repeated referral to
"animals don't create anything".
What do you mean by that?

Regarding the post location: After posting, I realized it was in the Pet Section - my apologies

Regarding "Animals don't create anything" - it's referring to the fact that animals don't create anything. Pretty obvious to me, but then maybe not to everyone else.

I haven't seen any animal have the higher intelligence to create things beyond their basic instincts to nest. Every animal builds a nest, cares for their young, fulfills their sexual instincts. Humans do all those things, but in ADDITION:

Just for 1 instance: They create means of transportation - to the moon for example. They explore - they are made not in the image of an animal - but in the image of a Higher Being. Human, not animal. This is an explanation of a question, not intended to be political or religious discussion.

By the way, I happen to think that horses are one of the most beautiful of God's creations and love them tremendously and am sick that someone would haul them double decker - it's tragic to say the least and inhumane.

short of a major edit involving deleting all posts and quotes referring to the statement, it will have to stand on it's own merit along with the explanation. I have informed rockhillmanor that the topic will remain in the General Category for a few days and then moved to "Other Pets".

I now return you to the topic, "Tragic accident kills 9 horses in illegal transportation"

On the Chicago TV news this PM there was a little more in depth report. The horses that didn't die or were euthanized due to injuries are currently being cared for by a rescue group near Wadsworth, IL. The driver is only facing traffic violations at this time, but the USDA and Illinois Ag Dept are investigating and multiple felony animal cruelty charges may be filed.

That's good news to hear.

The OP was about an accident AND the regulations pertaining to
violating the mode of tranportation of said animals.

That said;

FYI: The same departments and regulations(albiet different for
each type of animal),are the SAME ones in place for protecting dogs.

Henceforth my inclusion of the fact of the violations for transport.

Where licensing is in place by the Dept of Ag, I.E what we consider
puppy mills, AND all commercial business that involve selling animals to retail
there is comprehensive set of government regulations set forth
for the transportation of these animals including dogs. AND these
are usually considered a felony if violated.

I just was a bit surprised of the posts that related to 'so what
they are just horses'.

Basically anyone that has bought a dog from a pet store should
be GLAD that these government regulations are in place too,
as they protect ALL animals/pets how they are transported.
From snakes, tropical fish, cats to spiders.

Yes, spiders I recently read of a violation where they did not
provide the correct mode of tranporting some taranchulas to a
pet store. Most of us would most likely roll our eyes on that
one, but the regs ARE inclusive of ALL living animals.

IMHO the government sucks in so many areas but they get it
right when it comes to the regulations regarding the
'transportation' of animals.
