I'm thinking of heading to the Black Hills in 2008. Probably late June or July. Anyone have recomendations for State or County Parks or even Forest Service or COE parks with camping?
We would like to stay away from the private RV parks and resorts. Mainly looking for a base camp to see the sites like the Badlands NP and Mount Rushmore and Or the Black Hills sites. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks in advance,

Custer State Park is one of the nicest we've seen in the USA. Very near Rushmore, other stuff also near. It is in the Black Hills, but that covers a lot of area.

Custer State Park. Choose one of the CGs with electric for the AC. This past July was hot (several days over 100 degrees) Blue Bell, Horse Camp, Grace Coolidge, Game Lodge Usually is cool at night, but days get hot.

Nothing near the Badlands of that nature that I'm aware of except the NP CG itself - no hookups, no shade. I second the opinion already posted about Custer SP. Some CGs within the SP - perhaps all of them - lack hookups, but at least some will have showers.

There is a nice COE park about 15 miles west of Hill City but I can't remember the name. It's not a frantic place like Custer, has lower rates and water and electric sites. Good luck / Skip

Ditto on Custer State Park.
We didn't find Custer "a frantic place" like skipnchar did, thought it was full, but many places are in mid-summer.

Good luck / Skip Skip is probably talking about Portola Reservoir, a COE park. I would also recommend Custer State Park and strongly recommend reservations. Very popular place with lots and lots of wildlife including a herd of around 1500 free roaming bison. Unless there have been changes in the last 3 years, there are no hookups at any of the campgrounds.

Some sites at some of the campgrounds in Custer State Park do have electric only. Check out the SD game fish and parks site for specific site information. None of the sites have water or sewer hookups, so if you need those items, you probally won't be happy staying in the state park and might want to check out some of the many private campgrounds in the area.

I know you said you wanted to stay away from private c/g but you might want to try Big Pine c/g in custer. We have stayed there many times and loved it. The owners ars super nice people and the c/g is set in tall pines. Very quiet and secluded.

I'll join the crowd recommending Custer State Park - good for a base but a very worthwhile destination on its own, lots to do and see. We also stayed in the Black Hills National Forest at the Sheridan Lake campground and would go back there too - more rustic than Custer (no showers) but quieter and as I recall more wooded - farther north so closer access to some of the sights. We were there mid July in 2004.
