We returned from 3 nights at John Pennekamp. This was our first trip to this park and Im sorry we didnt visit this park sooner. We've been camping 3-4 times per year in The Keys and have camped at Bahia Honda, Curry Hammock and Long Key numerous times. About 4 years ago we did a drive through at Pennekamp and didnt think much of it and never considered camping there until last weekends trip. While the sites can be a bit narrow and are not directly on the water I found the park to be a great place to visit with countless things to do. The camping area was fine and the restrooms were clean. We brought our kayaks and found some nice trails within the mangroves. The boat launch was nice and easy with a spot in the water for our boat (first come first serv). We fished and the kids had a blast catching lots of small snappers. The two beaches were pretty nice as far as The Keys goes. We enjoyed Far Beach. There is a snorkel trip that departs 3 times a day right from within the park as well as a glass bottom boat ride and a dive boat. If you looking to wine and dine there are pleanty of rest's.and pubs close by as well as all your shopping and supply needs.

If water sports and activities is your thing...this is a wonderful place to enjoy it.

The weather was perfect...warm days and cool nights..we met some real ncie folks camping there as well.

We havent been to a Fla. State Park that we havent liked. Cant wait until our next trip which will be a 7 nights at Anastasia SP.

Sounds nice after a few negative post about the park. If you have pictures please post.

Thank you so much for the review - we're going there the first week of June. I've heard so many negative reviews about this park, but I also realize that there are folks out there who are very difficult to please. I guess it just depends on what kind of experience you're looking for. I'm not picky - as long as there is wildlife I'm happy!

Happy.

Its real nice..June will be real hot and buggy. I'd bring lots of bug spray...some fans to keep a breeze at your site. There is a small pond near the CG with sitting water which Im sure is a skeeter haven. We too will be camping in The Keys June 2008...7-14th at Bahia Honda. Thats another buggy place. This past weekend we were blessed with cool temps and a nice breeze.

Memorial weekend 2008, we'll be at Curry Hammock SP, a place we haven't been
and we are looking forward to it.
Again, I always bring the bug spray and a few fans, just in case.....

Now that the secret is out, we have to kill you!
We spend two weeks there every winter and can't wait to get back.
We'll be there in February this coming year.

Glad you had a great time. I’ve always liked the park itself but found out the last time we were there that things had went down hill at the campground. Maybe they're getting it back together.

It's still on the bottom of my list as far as the state parks in the keys are concerned. I think everyone needs to go at least once tho and experience the park, it is very nice with plenty of things to do.
The last time we stayed there we took our see thru bottom Kayaks and had a blast.

see through bottom kayaks? Oh Geez...now we gotta look into those things ! LOL

As far as what park was at the bottom of our list for The Keys..You'll all think were crazy but Im putting Long Key last. We too had Pennekamp at the bottom until this trip. We camped Long Key 3 times..We found that outside of being on the water....LK offers nothing as far as things to do and the park is near nothing as well. If somebody is looking to vegg-out and do nothing then Long Key is the spot...but if your looking to be active...I think the 3 other parks offer so much more.

To each his own I suppose.

I agree with your assessment of Long Key and that is exactly why I like it so much
