Hi

I just changed my oil to all amsoil oil and filter.
i have a new fuel filter but in the manual i see no directions on how to change it?

This is for a 1998 Dodge 3500 24 V diesel.

How do i take the filter off and change it.

Or can you point me to a web link showing this.

Thanks

It's a spin-on filter like an oil filter. Unscrew it and screw on a new one. (Unless they've changed things since I changed them on my 1996 3500. On later trucks I had the dealer do it because I got lazy.)

They've changed. My '01.5 and '03 were a cartridge filter in a filter housing. I would drain a little fuel out of the filter with the yellow lever, remove the cap/filter with I think it was a 1-1/8 socket? Swap the elements and O-ring, check with a flash light for any debris in the canister, re-install the new filter and just snug the plastic cap down good. Clean fuel goes down the tiny hole in the tit sticking up the middle of the canister so be sure you don't get any foreign matter in there. Don't wipe it off either. It will be clean if you haven't contaminated it. If you buy a good Fleetguard fuel filter, it'll have a new O-ring and a little folded intruction leaflet in the wrapper. To re-prime the filter, turn the key on but don't start it a couple of times for a few seconds. You'll hear the fuel pump humm for a few seconds each time. Some folks like to drain all the fuel from the canister but I never did and don't see any reason to. The last few changes I didn't drain any fuel from the canister and it started right up after. The old filter would soak enough fuel out with it to keep the canister from over flowing when I took the old filter out. One more thought. Some of the caps had a 3/8" drive hole in the middle of the 1-1/8"? socket fitting. Don't use the 3/8" drive hole. The plastic will break before the cap comes loose and you'll use horrible language...

On my 2004 CTD, it is a canister type filter. Drain the diesel in the canister, close the valve back up and remove the top lid of the canister. Remove the filter cartridge & rubber O ring and insert new filter plus O ring on the top lid. If you notice on the top of the lid, it will be stamped with the torgue seting. Use a torgue wrench and you'll also need a swivel socket. DO NOT overtighten or you will crack the canister / lid and allow air to enter the fuel rail / injectors which can be costly to fix plus blowing diesel all over the place. Once this is done, turn the ignition on a few times til the fuel filter / canister is full of fuel and the fuel pump no longer makes the buzzing sound which means it is full of diesel and ready to crank

Be sure to take the water sensor out of the old filter to go back in the new filter, the new filter should come with a new O-ring for the sensor.

True for the 12v Cummins. The 24v Cummins starting in '98.5 held the water sensor in the canister. It doesn't come out with the filter...

What Hannibal said. 1 and an 1/8" socket, he's right on the water sensor thing too.

This may help. The fuel filter is the cannister directly UNDER the #6 (not what the #6 is pointing to) and directly ABOVE the #17. The "nut" on top is the 1-1/8" molded in nut. The plastic lid that you remove is black.

I'm not sure this would help, but the link is to a picture play by play of how to change the fuel filter on a 3rd generation Dodge Cummins.

If anything, it might give you an example to follow with your particular style filter.
