Last camping trip my refrigerator quit working on elect but worked fine on prop. When I went to come home the coach battery was dead, would that be the problem and if so why would it work on prop.

Most models require 12v power to work even when plugged in to 120v "electric" (as we say in the states). The 12v from the battery powers the control board. Dead battery equals no cooling even with 120v power. However, with no 12v power, the fridge shouldn't work on propane either (again depending on the model).

Now if your battery is dead it could indicate a bad converter or a blown 12v fuse somewhere.

Need more info for an accurate answer.

Here is my guess. Most fridges have a control board, powered by 12 volts. If battery died while board had fridge to propane, or that was default position, it would work on propane but not 120 VAC.

True? No idea, but sounds good anyway.

Just so you know, the original poster is from London Ontario. Our electricity supplier used to be called Ontario Hydro. So all our electric bills were called hydro bills. The name has recently been changed to "Hydro One"!

make ? model ? age of fridge ?

control board controls switching modes, propane gas valve, igintion of propane flame

electric heating element might have burned out, or no voltage on the 120v plug for the fridge, if its old enough, 1982? there won't be any 12v control board, just manual switches

I don't think so. The board need the 12V to hold the gas solenoid open. The non-powered position for the gas valve solenoid is off.

ScottnSherrie nailed it - without 12V to the control board there is no signal to open the gas solenoid. Voila - no cooling!
(But I did understand the "Hydro" bit as I used to live in Ontario!)

Sorry, apparently one of the mods has an issue with my twisted sense of humor.

So are almost all the power in Canada hydroelectric or is the term "hyro" used for all electric power even if coal or oil fired?
