I know that some parts of the route 1 coast road can be traversed with a 32' fifth-wheel and some is not suitable.
Can anyone suggest a resource which will give guidence on the passable sections. We want to travel on route 1 as much as possible from south of San Francisco to the LA areas. Thanks.

Technically Hwy 1 is passable with a 32' footer both north and south of the bay area...but north is MUCH tougher. Going south all the the way out through Big Sur is certainly much easier. Keep both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road and enjoy the adventure.
Have a good and safe trip.

The only section that you may want to avoid is the Big Sur section..... from Carmel down to Cambria, lots of 15mph white knuckle turns. You can cut over to the 101 south of Santa Cruz and then take 46 Paso Robles over to Cambria on the coast.
We travel to Big Sur a lot coming from the south and even in our camper I prefer to miss that section of highway. If you want to see some of that coastline and have some extra time, take the 25 mile trip from Carmel to Big Sur...... there's a few tight slow turns, but nothing like the road south of Big Sur.

Thanks for the info from SLOjim and donwtheroad. Sounds like a good plan. Even if we don't tow down through Big Sur we will drive there to our favorite place for brunch, Kafe Kiva at Nepehthe. Hope they still have the three berry pie.
Thankfully, time we have. Great to be retired and fulltiming.
Seems like I remember some white knuckle grades near Paso Robles.

A great piece of 1 is from Oxnard to I-10 in Santa Monica. Traffic gets a little heavy during rush hour, as you approach Santa Monica, but it is still easier than the 101. Most of it is 4 lane, after a section of one lane with passing lanes, between Pt Mugu and the LA/Ventura county line. Stop at Neptunes Net (just as the road turns to 4 lane) for some great food.

You may be referring to the Questa grade between Paso Robles and SLO .... they've made improvements 4 or 5 years ago, but it you cut over to the coast on 46 you'll avoid it. 46 is a very easy drive with beautiful views as you approach the coast.

Ah yes, the Questa grade. I remember the experience well, but did not remember the location well. If I remember it correctly it provided as much of a thrill as any encountered on the main highways in the west. There are probably some more exciting but I have just not travened them yet.
Thanks.

CALTRANS Bus and Motorhome map
Click on the section you will travel and it gives the legal restrictions. Although the restrictions are for MH and busses, since a fith wheel is articulated I think your combined length can be 10' more than the restrictions.
Some of the roads are narrow with sharp curves so while you can travel on most if not all of the road you have to judge if it is advisable for you.
