We're going to Glacier NP in mid-June 2008 (arriving June 17). Will spend one week on west side (Fish Creek) and the next week on east side (St. Mary). Then we must make it all the way home (south Texas) by July 9.
But before we start our camping in Glacier we will have almost two weeks available to see the rest of Montana –- roughly June 4 until we arrive at Fish Creek on the 17th.
What would you suggest as the "must-sees" in this state, other than Glacier? Please suggest attractions, scenery and campgrounds. One note: a couple of years ago we did Yellowstone NP and the Custer Battlefield thing with the reenactment and everything. All of that was tremendous, but since we have limited time in 2008, we would rather see other Montana offerings on this trip.
We especially like national and state park campgrounds with larger campsites and some space between sites. We really go for the great view from the campsites. Dry camping does not bother us; in fact we would rather do that than be squeezed into a private campground with a great view of someone else's rig on either side!
So what do you think?

Billings has some interesting places, Helena the capital is good for a day or 2 Great Falls about the same, Kalispel has the Fire Fighters Center, and there are other places. Coming fron TX you might find some interesting places in Colorado. Good luck
Check the mileage and if you have the time there are several sites in SD that are nice. Mt. Rusmore, The Badlands, Devil's Tower to name a few. My mileage counter indicateds it would only add about 600 miles to your return trip.
Don't go to or support Billings. It is one of the most RV unfriendly cities in the nation. The city fathers has prohibited all over night parking in the city for RV's. If it's not a camp ground don't use it.
I'm not sure I agree w/this but there isn't a whole lot to see in Billings.
I would recommend the Beartooth Highway. It is one of the most beautiful roads in the country. If your a snow skier bring your skis and ski a glacier. There is a nice NFS campground on the Montana side just below the switchbacks.
Don't know that I'd recommend Beartooth in early June; it's likely to not even be open for the season yet. Check on road conditions before making any definite plans in that area.
Havre, MT has an underground city you can tour. At Great Falls there is a wonderful Lewis and Clark exhibit, and there is an artist (I think his name is C.M. Russell) that has a museum.

Stop at Livingston, MT. Just a few miles north of I-90, east of Bozeman. The town will take you back to the 40's and 50's. Also much to do all around Flathead Lake.
An absolute must is a trip to Polebridge. Go early and get some baked goods at the Polebridge Mercantile. Next door is the Northern Lights Diner for dinner. I have weard there Pizza is exclent. Not much else to see there, but the Huckleberry Bearclaw's are to die for.
Whitefish is is nice skiing community with nice shops.
We hiked to iceberg lake. Beautiful hike lots of sun head out early. The water is cold so be warned.
