I found this recipe on the internet and thought putting honey in chili sounded strange, but the reviews of this recipe made it sound pretty good so I thought I'd give it a try. I was very pleasantly surprised. We loved it! This will become a regular recipe for us for sure.

I made these changes from the original recipe. I used 1 lb ground turkey instead of ground beef, the green chiles instead of jalapenos (didn't have any on hand), omitted the Accent and cut the cinnamon in half. Served it over a little cooked pasta, think I'll try cornbread next time.

Spicy Sweet Honey Chili

2 lbs ground beef
1 cup chopped onions
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 Cup chopped green peppers
1 1/2 diced jalapeno peppers -OR- 1 can (4 oz) diced green chiles
2 (15 oz) cans chili beans
1 (14 1/2 oz) can of petite diced tomatoes
1 1/2 Tsp chili powder
1 Tsp cumin
1 Tsp thyme
1/2 Tsp salt
1 1/2 Tsp Accent flavor enhancer (optional)
1/2 Tsp cinnamon
1/3-1/2 Cup honey

1. Crumble ground beef in large pan; add accent flavor enhancer.
2. Brown ground beef.
3. Add onion, green pepper, and garlic.
4. Cook until onion is translucent; and drain.
5. Add tomatoes, jalapeƱo peppers, chili beans, chili powder, cumin, thyme, salt and cinnamon.
6. Stir and simmer on low for at least 25 minutes.
7. Add honey; stir again.
8. Serve alone, over rice, or pasta. Also good with cornbread or crackers.

And I thought an addition of honey was strange! I'm not sure I'm adventurous enough to cook beans in Dr Pepper. By the way, how did it turn out? Do you get a strong Dr Pepper or Root Beer taste?

I've done beans with Dr Pepper before. It adds a touch of sweetness, but it's not discernible that it's Dr Pepper.

For my chili, I usually just use a package of 2-Alarm Chili Mix, but I add a large can of diced tomatoes and my "secret ingredient", BROWN SUGAR (about 1/2 cup per pound of meat)!

I always add brown sugar to my sloppy joe mix, but never thought of it for chili. I think I'm going to give some of these ideas a try, especially that Dr Pepper trick! Thanks all for the ideas.
