Has anyone rented a satellite phone for Mexico travel? Where is the best deal? Is the service OK? All info appreciated.

We have a TELCEL SIM card for our cell phone; gives us a Mexican tel number, but its expensive. We also use SKYPE very effectively when there is a good wifi connection; VERY inexpensive.

Thanks for the replies. We will be traveling in Baja California for two weeks end of April '08 and are considering renting the sat phone for emergency use, I think it would be worth it.

We have taken an Iridium phone to MX, not really worth it. I opted for an Iridium pager & a GSM (AT&T) phone. This way I can be paged anywhere on the planet, then find my way to a phone. In MX GSM (TelCel) is widely available in MX, especilly Baja, but there are dead spots (which is why I have the Iridim pager). Stay away from us providers offering usacell (verizon), small market share, small coverage areas, does not work well as opposed to GSM which is seamless.

I use Skype quite a bit. Works great considering you only pay .02 cents per minute. If I need to use an internet cafe and they don't already have the software downloaded, I ask permission and so far have never been refused. Most of the time they are amazed to see me using my headset and speaking on the Skype phone.

Remember too, Skype to Skype is no charge. It couldn't get any better than that (but I am sure it will).
