I know this isn't completely on forum but I figured somebody here might have a great idea.

2 kids bikes 2 adult mountain bikes, one Jeep Wrangler with soft top.

I know there are spare tire racks but I've only seen 3 deep and not for full suspension mountain bikes.

The hitch ones means I have to install a hitch receiver on the Jeep. Doable but am open to other ideas.

Anybody done the double hitch thing (upper = bike rack, lower equal tow bar) ? Clearance issues ?

This is what we use on our Wrangler but you'll need a trailer hitch on the Jeep.

Here's a link:
Thule Roadway at REI.com

We carry two adult bikes and two kid's bikes, works great.

Thule and Yakima make 4 bike racks that fit into a hitch receiver. Cross over to Washington and check a G.I. Joe store for a better price than a bike shop.

A hitch mounted rack is probably the least expensive and least hassle way to go. Jeep doesn't recommend mounting anything on the top so you'de have to buy a roof rack that mounts to the body and has legs that go around either the soft or hard top. Then mount a bike rack on the framework above the roof.

Doing this makes it a real hassle to either remove the hard top or lower the soft top. We opted for adding a hitch and receiver style bike rack. It took less than an hour to mount the hitch since there are already holes in the frame designed for mounting. Then it's just a matter of slipping the rack on and off as needed.

I've tried the Thules and I've tried the Yakimas. All the racks that mount on the rear hitch and hold the bike by the top tube allow the bikes to sway. They can rub against each other and that can cause all sorts of damage. The place where the rack supports them can also cause damage, especially after it gets some road grit on it.

Then I found this rack and would never think of anything else again. It both supports and holds the bikes by the wheels. They can't come into contact with one another.

The only drawback I've found is that it's more bulky to store when it's not in use than the others.

The site contains some review by Mountain Bike Magazine. To read the second review and see more pix, click on the link at the bottom of the first review.

I use it on my Wrangler even when it's not in toad mode.

I bought a hitch extender, which put my hitch behind the spare tire on my Jeep. These are readily available through places like Camping World and Northern Tool. Hard to beat the strength of a hitch mounted bike rack.
