I think you are confusing (state required and issued) non-commercial licenses with USDOT required and state issued Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
I have gone through the USDOT website and I can find nothing that pertains to anything but Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) operators needing a CDL.
CDL operators are subject to Alcohol & Drug testing per the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 (OTETA). We are subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and accident follow up (under certain conditions) testing. If you obtain (and are required to have) a CDL to operate your rig, yo would be subject to OTETA testing and all the other requirements any other CDL driver would be.
Quote: He also proceeded to tell me that "Technically" ANY vehicle with a GVWR of 10k is required to have a "Motor Carrier" endorsement and have numbers on the side of the truck...
According to the USDOT website, "Companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce must be registered with the FMCSA and must have a USDOT Number."
No where does it say anything about a non commercial vehicle needing USDOT numbers.
I have USDOT numbers for my pickup, that I need when I tow my gooseneck trailer for our family business, which puts my combined weight over 10,000 lbs. I remove my magnetic signs when I am hooked to my fifth wheel, since it is then a non commercial vehicle.

When my grown kids were inspecting our new fifth wheel, one asked why we bought a trailer that sleeps 4. My reply was that we couldn't find one that sleeps 2!

The law says a Class C license can drive up to a 40 foot 5'er and/or up to 15K pounds. I attached the CA DMV link in case I am missing something.
I have a Fuzion 362 which is 38 feet. Not sure where my weight stickers are as I just got it.
Two questions:
Am I legal, and where do they put the weight sticker?

Sticker is usually in the Kitchen cabinets
You will also need the RV Endorsement, which is just a written test.

Is it a point on the record and a fine or just a "fix it" ticket?

Bummer, I have been watching all these threads and have a lot of questions.
Funny how we pull up and buy our trailer, dealer said I am 100% legal!
what are the laws behind non-comm class A, are you held at a higher level from tickets, etc?

badbrad60 wrote: Yes..I have a CDL, just not the right one. I got pulled over for being stupid. The red light was marginal...but gave him "The reason" to pull me over. We had the plate in the camper...just lagged on putting it on, so he just gave me a fix it ticket.... I told him I had been planning on getting the Class A, but just hadn't done it yet. He told me could have impounded my entire rig....Damn...Lucky. He also proceeded to tell me that "Technically" ANY vehicle with a GVWR of 10k is required to have a "Motor Carrier" endorsement and have numbers on the side of the truck...He said he doesn't really focus on that...but could if he wanted to ...... I asked him how many people have Class A license that just pull 15k + haulers....he said...Pretty much no one does.....and that is why the CHP is cracking down HARD on this. If I run into any problems along the way to getting legal, I'll let you all know. ~Brad

I was abbreviating CDL for California Drivers license....and after reading up come to find out that it means Commercial Drivers license. Sorry bout that...I meant I had a license, just not the A non com I need. I have never had Any reason to have a commercial license, which is why I know nothing about it....but...Im getting smarter every day.
I still don't understand how folks like myself get notified of the need to have this particular license...?? You would think that when the trailer was registered, some sort of paperwork or notice would be sent with the tags stating what is required to tow a 17k 5er. Guess this was my way of HAVING to go get it done.... ~Brad

Funny that the state isn't required to notify you of law changes, but "ignorance to the law is no excuse" when you are in violation.
