We drove the TOW eastbound in late August. We spent the night in Chicken, and left early in the morning. The scenery was great, and there was virtually no traffic. The rain a few days before eliminated the dust. There were potholes but they were easy to avoid if not going too fast. There was also no wait for the ferry. I would not hesitate to do it again although I don't think I would drive it both ways on the same trip.

We went to Alaska last Summer and loved it. Went up the Cassair Hwy. and would never go that way again. The road was so torn up, full of pot holes, ruts and stutter bumps that it took us seven hours to go 130 miles! Later, after arriving at Tok, took the toad up to Chicken and thought that that road was much better. Didn't go all the way to Dawson but the next time, that's the way we will go. Slow down and enjoy the ride.

You didn't get to the "interesting" part of the road then.

2006 went to AK for 90days, top of the world highway was a disapointment, Canada side was mostly dirt but OK for a DIRT road, the US side was down hill wash board gravel the whole way to chicken. I was cleaning dust out of my MH for weeks after that section. Once you reach the top section it doe's not change much and you reach that area within a few miles of crossing the river. The drive to Dawson was nice but after the crossing over and onto the dirt and gravel all I can say is I DID IT, never again.. Watch out for 4 wheeled speeders..

Don't listen to the wimps that are not happy unless they can drive 50-60 MPH! The trip is well worth the time to do it. If you don't, you will always look back and wish you had.

We went East bound last summer. It was the first of September. We were in Dawson City for Labor Day. They celebrate it in the Yukon the same as we do. The big feature for Labor Day is their International Outhouse Race. The dancers from Diamond Tooth Gertie's Saloon were in good physical condition and won the race. The city was not crowded and the tours were not filled. The ice cream shop was closing down for the winter and was giving away ice cream. We only had to wait for the second ferry. I would recommend the East bound but not later than Labor Day as the tours were winding down.

For those of you who are worried about taking your rigs on the ToW, there's a photo at the Chicken Gold Camp Web site you should see - http://chickengold.com/images/outpost_guests.html

Hayes The only ones that scream about the road being horrible, are the ones that think they have to drive 60+ or their not doing it right. Those of us that are willing to slow down and watch the scenery, know it is a decent road, paved with chip seal from the Yukon River to the Border check point and then mostly dirt from there to Chicken airport. I rather enjoy the road, except if following a caravan. Yes, that was a great picture of the oldies.
