We are planning to make a quick tour of eastern Texas probably in February. We are especially interested in campgrounds in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Houston/Galveston, and perhaps San Antonio for 5-7 days each. We would like full hookups, but other amenities are optional. Any suggestions? Also Texas is so huge and the info is rather overwhelming---are there any "Don't miss!" attractions that we may not be aware of? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

We are in Texas right now at Somewhere RV Park in Mineola, TX. We decided to cross the state on rt 380 into NM and get off I-20. These people have made us feel like family. I called the campground from the Welcome Center as we entered TX. Got voice mail, but I did not leave a message. They called back anyway. He gave us directions and said his wife would be here to greet us. He called again as we were near to say his wife had to go out for a while, but to come on in and hook up--he did not want us to think we were abandoned. It is a new--actually under construction park. When wife got here, she hugged us, showed us around. They have full hookups and wifi. I am a happy camper.

Quick trip is unadvisable for the itinerary you list. If you want to visit East Texas, then Houston and San Antonio are out as they are south and south central Texas respectively. In the Dallas area, I recommend you stay at Destiny RV park in Corinth, about a 20 minute trip ti downtown Dallas. If you really want to visit east Texas you may also want to include the Tyler area and the piney woods area to your trip.

If it were me (and I'm prejudiced), I'd rather tour the Hill Country and plan on spending a couple weeks visiting the Austin and San Antonio areas in conjunction with the touring. Also, the time of year you are talking about COULD be iffy regarding the weather. On the other hand, it may be perfect. Just wait five minutes and the weather is sure to change.

Hi day52,

You will have a nice time here. You might tell us though if you are coming here to camp, or to see the sights, as it would make a difference what places I would recommend.

I highly recomend the Amarillo area and the Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Nice Campgrounds and hiking trails.

If you get close to the North East part of Texas I would recommend camping at one of the many campgrounds on Lake of The Pines and spend some time in the Historic town of Jefferson. Lake Wright Patman is another beautiful place to camp in between Texarkana and Atlanta Texas which would be about a 30 mile drive to Jefferson. The General Store in Jefferson is a fun place to go back in history. Has a working Soda Fountain!

I would go to the Texas Parks and Wildlife website and then try and figure out what or where I want to go and do. East Texas is nice with plenty of State Parks. I would also advise you to check out the Corp of Engineer website also. Plenty of nice COE parks around east Texas that are open year around.

Check out Double Lake Recreation Area near Coldspring located in the Sam Houston National Forest. We just love it there. The sites are large and secluded within the trees, there is a small lake with a trail around it and a swim beach, during season they rent canoes, they deliver your firewood. It is our favorite place and it is only an hour away from us.

I would also suggest the Jefferson area.

Thanks from everyone so far. Guess I wasn't too specific as to locale. When I wrote about eastern Texas, I just meant coming from Ohio, we didn't believe we could have enough time to do the far western part of the state. We would like to see some sights of course, but usually find that we spend a half day sightseeing/shopping, etc. and half the day at the campground. We bike and hike some. We know we can't do everything, so we're jujst looking for suggestions like the ones we have in this topic. So many people here are so helpful. We have received countless tips to help us in our travels.
