I posted, last week on this and only got one response. I know that just happens sometimes,,,figured I would try again.
Are there any trailers that have a built in generator compartment? I know a lot of toyhaulers have them, but, don't need a toyhauler. Hubby and I do a lot of boondocking. Will need generator as a backup, when we hike or go in the store etc. One sitting in the back of the pickup (even if it is chained) is a "take me" sign, trying to avoid that. Its also easier to have an automatic genset.
I have a 5th wheel and when I bought it I ordered a generator installed cause I like to do a lot of boondocking. There has been times when it is a long way to town to get fuel for it and I'm not crazy about carrying 20 gal. of fuel around in cans. I added 360 watts of solor power to charge the batteries and added a 1500 watt inverter for my 120 v needs. I now use the gen. as backup for my solor panels and the power for them is free. A lot of folks will think that 360 watts is more than I need but I have no problem keeping the batteries charged.

I contacted the manufacturer of my TT to ask if I could mount a generator in a compartment and they said that I would need to line the compartment with tin and make sure no fumes would come into the living space. they said it is doable. TT's generally do not come with a generator compartment...why...I don't know, but it seems it would be a nice addition. I mounted mine to my bumper: http://www.rvpics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=392

I've seen a trailer with a generator compartment but it was home made and frankly not very well done. I would not want to be inside that trailer with the generator running because it was not (in my opinion) tight enough to keep CO out of the living quarters. I've been leaving my portable generator sit beside the trailer for quite a few years and it's always been waiting for me when I returned. If it ever WOULD decide to "leave me" I have insurance. I think lots of folks over state the number of people just hanging around campgrounds waiting for a chance to rip something off because it is pretty rare for it to happen.

I am toying with the idea of installing one of these on the rear of my TT Gen Box
You can get a Gen Box to permanently mount a genset on your TT. I'm going to see a welder this Saturday to get a quote on making a rear carrier to accommodate a Gen Box.

It is noted in the literature with the box that the box is for TONGUE mounting applications. As others have said, that's a lot of weight (Box plus generator weight) to be placed well rear of trailer axles. Certainly will effect tongue weight and could produce a "light tongue" condition that leads to trailer sway.
