Carfax and autocheck always say "VIN not found" when entering a trailer VIN#. Now if it's a motor home with a chassis built by Ford, GM etc. it will show up. But I've found no means anywhere to check a trailer, whether it be 5th wheel, travel trailer, popup, etc. to see it's history of registrations, possible salvage title etc. Anybody got any ideas?
Good question. Perhaps your insurance company can get some information on the unit for you. I would assume they run a check on the numbers when generating a new policy. However, there could be a legal technicality wherein they can't run the numbers until YOU own it. Just a thought.
Your insurance company should be able to run it. Call them and tell them you are thinking about buying the trailer and see if they will give you price. I have done it before when I bought vehicles.
DMV for registrations would be the only source IMO. Trailers are not motor vehicles and would not be listed in CarFax or other sources as they do not have a powertrain, etc.

When I worked for the local Sheriff's Dept. we would run VIN check all the time. The person requiring the VIN check would get the form from their local license branch for BMV. We would run the VIN and once it came back clear via our dispatcher we just signed their form. All we were doing was verifying that it was in fact the vehicle and that the VIN had not been altered.
