We are planning a trip to Kansas City this summer. We really like State Parks, but have stayed in many private parks too. We love history, museums, and wineries. What is the closest SP to Kansas City?....thanks

You might try Weston Bend State Park. About 30 miles north.
Weston is a small town near by with Antique stores, winerys, ect.
1-816-640-5443 if you need to find out more. I don't know if they take reservations or not.

Jackson County has some campgrounds on the lakes around the city - the website is http://www.jacksongov.org/content/1169/1211/1439/default.aspx

I would recommend Jacomo just because that is a good location but I have never camped there - went there with parents as a child

Also Smithville Lake in Platte county has several campgrounds - THis is a north of Kansas City

There's also Watkins Mill State Park, north east of KC about 30 miles, near Kearny, Mo. A pretty state park with a working mill operated by an old fashioned water wheel.

If your looking for scenic attractions and wineries I recommend WESTON MISSOURI. It is a very historic town with several attractions in the area. The town is about 40 miles NE of Kansas City, MO. You can make reservations at MISSOURI STATE PARKS. If you want more info just PM me. Good luck.

20miles north of KCMO is Smithville Lake with numerous SPs and CGs. We like the COE CG below the dam, with full hookups for around $20/night. 10mins from North KCMO, 20mins from downtown (non-rush hour of course).

I'll second this one below Smithville lake dam. I believe however its a county park and may not be listed in the COE parks.
