I just saw this new item at Northern Tool and wonder if anyone else has tried it yet to mount a bike carrier. Any problems??

I already have a hitch receiver type bike carrier and this would be perfect for me to put a couple of bikes on the back of the TT.

Bikes on bumpers often = bumpers and bikes on highway. You're a lot better of with a receiver mounted carrier attached to the frame.

I have one like that I need to sale it's sitting on a shelf in my shed. It worked ok but I didn't like it with my 4 bike rack. I have a Saris receiver rack, but with all 4 bike on it it seemed like the bikes slid forward to much, even with putting foam/tape between each holder. But it works good with just 2 bikes on it. I also got a rack like THIS but the thing I don't like with it is the first bike closest to the TT you have to loosen the handle bars and turn it or it rubs the TT. Now that I got a new TV I made a PVC bike rack and really like it. I left the bumper mounted bike rack on the TT and now use it to carry other stuff. I may take it off and sale it though since I really don't need it.

We took off on a 17k mile trip with a 2 bike rack mounted aroud our thin metal bumper, and 1/3 of the way the bumper had cracks in it! Since they were folding bikes, we put them in the back of the Yukon and re-mounted the spare tire on the bumper AFTER having the bumper re-welded.

has anyone ever tried one of those racks that mount to a ladder??? thought that would keep the bikes up out of the way but if they can break a bumper then maybe a ladder is weaker and would not hold up either

Whatever you use, make sure they're fastened on REALLY well! Last year we were about 300 yards behind someone with a TT, with about 4 bikes on the back - I think they were on one of those racks that fits into a hitch receiver. Anyway, they were going pretty fast and the area where we were had some uneven pavement joints. Those bikes were bouncing like mad, and sure enough, pretty soon one fell off, then the others followed. Fortunately he noticed and was able to stop, but probably not without some damage to the bikes - and not without disrupting traffic.

I am ok with how I mounted my generator on the bumper using those Curt RV bumper hitches, but I would not feel comfortable with bikes back there. The generator does not bounce where the bikes would and that is what will cause most of the problems......the bouncing.

I have driven behind RVs that had bikes dangling from the ladders, look shaky at best, I wouldn't do that personally. My dad has a 5er with a ladder, only 12 small, short screws hold it in place. Add in some water damaged wood and say goodby to bikes and ladder.
As far as ANY RV bumper mounts, forget it, I almost lost mine after the second trip. Found the bumper ripping away from weld on the second trip.
I built a rack that goes over my topper on the pickup truck, no more worries. I would suggest for SUVs to look at the rack that goes over the top of the propane tanks on the tongue.
