At the risk of sounding like a fool, I can't get my new 2008 Chevy 2500HD Diesel/Allison to shift with the "buttons" in the manual mode. I forget what the option is called, but when you put the gear selector down to "M" it comes up with a number from 1-6 to the right of the "M" and you're supposed to be able to manually shift by pressing the plus or minus button on the gear shift lever. I've tried doing it from a dead stop with the indicator showing M1, but when I take off and try to press the plus button to shift, it stays in 1st gear. Anyone out there have that option on their truck and can tell me if I'm doing something wrong or should I take it in for repair?

The manual shift mode will NOT let you shift manually into the gears. When in the manual mode, the transmission shifts essentially the same as in the normal mode except the "top" gear it will shift up to is the one selected in manual.

Manual Mode doesn't necessarily let you select gears. It allows you to HOLD a certain gear. This is usefull when towing to prevent the transmition from "hunting" for a gear when going up a hill.

The manual says to do exactly what I described, but I thought maybe I was missing something.

ummmm, are your sure of what your talking about ..... why would there be plus and minus signs on the gear selector????
You can switch gears, I have done it in the higher gears, but not from first gear. Check the manual!

When you are driving along and shift into manual, the "M" number that shows on the display is the gear the transmission was in when you moved the shift lever to manual. Once in the manual mode, the transmission will never shift to a gear higher than the one displayed. If you shift into manual at a dead stop, the gear and number shown will always be 1. If you were to "click" the display up to, let's say 4, while stopped, the truck will accelerate normally, shifting automatically until you reach 4th gear and then it will not shift to a gear above 4th. If you are driving along at 70 mph and then shift into manual, you will find that you are in 6th gear (unless you're climbing a hill or accelerating). If you then manually shift to 5, the transmission will shift into 5th. If you then bring the truck to a stop, and accelerate back up to speed, the truck will auto shift normally until you reach 5th gear.

One thing I should have pointed out is that when in the manual mode, the display does not show the gear the transmission is shifted into. It shows only the manual selection of the highest gear the transmission will shift up to.

Hi. On my 2006 D/A if I put put the gear selector in M it shows numbers from 6 5 4 3 2 1. If Im stopped and put it in M it shows
Im in 1st gear and if I start to drive it stays in 1st gear until
I press the + button on the gear shift handle to shift into 2nd and the same again up to 6th gear.. you can leave it showing any gear and then the tranny will shift up to that point but not further. if you have it in say 5th your truck will shift up and down normally but will only go as high as 5th gear.
