Hello everyone,
I am waiting to take delivery of my new 2008 Cougar 289 BHS and was wondering if anyone has experience with the new silent generators. I have a contact that could get me an Onan 5000KW(or maybe it was a 5KW) silent RV generator that runs off propane. I have grown up camping without services and wouldn't mind the flexibility of having the generator. I know noise is a concern and wouldn't want to invest in something that I couldn't really make good use of.

Thanks in advance!

We purchased a Kippor 2600. We love it, VERY quiet and it runs everything in the trailer including the AC, just not all at the same time. Weighs in at 65lbs. Can get 1 for under $800 on Ebay.

I belive that a gas generator will serve you better than one that runs on propane.

For short runs, an onboard propane generator is nice. I have a Generac 3600. But, if your style of camping is boondocking and you need air conditioning, a gas portable is the way to go. My genny is an energy hog and propane isn't as readily available as gas. Heavy use of the generator and my 2 30# tanks don't last very long.

I've got the Kippor 3000i. VERY quiet. It has problems running the microwave above 8000 feet, but other than that I REALLY enjoy this unit.

A 5.kw propane generator requires a dedicated bottle. When you
don t have propane your dead in the water. Can t run frig, hot water
heater, furnace, or any other propane appliance. Propane is not
always easy to get. If you have a choice get a 5.5kw gas genset,
Do it while the unit is being built, other wise you will need to
have a seperate aux gas tank, which can be a P I T A, because you
will be carring loose gas cans. With a gas genset, although you
have two different fuels, you will always have the frig, and all the
other propane applicance working off the propane bottles, )probably
two bottles{ It takes along time to empty two bottles using just
the frig and the HW heater. If you have the money get a Platinum
5.5ks Onan gas genset. Get it built into the unit. The Platinum is
fuel injected and requires a return line to the gas tank. Fuel
injection doesn t require as much maintainence.

I totally disagree - this is too absolute.

A 5kw LP generator does not "require" a dedicated bottle, it works just fine sharing LP with the other appliances. It does have a limited run time (max about 20 hrs at half load given full LP tanks). If your using it to boondock, you've got the wrong generator.

The Onan 5K LP are perfect gensets if you like the luxury of just pressing start whevever you want power. No cords, no lifting, NO GAS. If you're hoping to hang out in the sand for days on end with now hookups, I agree, go for the gas and twin Honda 2000s under a tree.

Hi! I have a 2006 Couger 296EFS. We carry a Honda 2000 Watt Generator runs most of the things you need. You need around 3000 Watt or more if you do a lot of boondocking to run everything in the trailer. My Honda 2000 runs at 53 or 57 db. It is USFS aproved for summer use and I can run it in a camp ground without any complants. They run about $999.00 to $1100.00ea. We are getting a second one to run in parallel so thst we can run everything. We are full time RV,s and we do alot of boondocking.

The manufacturer of NuWa trailers won't put a gas generator in there trailers. He said that there are to many things that could lead to lawsuits. That being said, propane will not as convenient as gas. It is generally easier to get gas then propane. So we decided on portable gas generators. You can use them anywhere. They store easily and no gas in the RV. If you want a built in, get propane in my opinion.

I like a gas gen over propane, but I find that I use the gen a hour here and a hour there at rest areas or when I need electrity for ac (I run both at same time)or to charge up house batteries,so it dosn't run for hours at a time..mine a 5K house gen and use a boat 7gal gas tank with quick connect fuel lines. The fuel tank is mounted in the bed of the truck when driving then on the ground when parked if more than a day,I was going to get a portable but needed 50amps
