A friend of mine sells Vans. Two days ago he took a 2002 3500 Dodge dually with the cummings diesel in trade. This truck has 131,400 miles on it. He wants $16,800 for it. Truck looks to be in pretty good condition. Is this a good price? I currently have a 1998 3500 Dodge dually with the V8 Magnum (360) gas engine and looking maybe to move up.
Thanks

2. That would be quite the upgrade. I speak from experience. My previous truck was a 2001 2500 with the 360 gasser under the hood. Tough truck, but low on power, and really liked to drink unleaded, especially when pulling. My mpg avg when towing doubled.
Assuming it is a SLT 5.9 HO, auto or 6 speed and 4WD. At that mileage, on a trade in he should have back of 13K less any $ needed to repair any obvious cosmetic damage, paintwork or mechanical problems.
It really depends on how clean the truck and what you can find about its history. The black book numbers listed above are real close to it's actual value.
If it is an auto, at that mileage, it should getting close to rebuilt time, if it has not already been done. If it is a manual I would check that clutch out for slipping and/noise under load. I would get in on a rack and check it out closely.
Thanks for the replies. I went back to look at the truck again. It is a 5.9 HO, auto, and 2WD. A lot of the options were not there that you would expect. In checking the figures above, it looks like he is asking about $2000 - $2500 more than the book value. He also is not flexable on the price so I think on this one I will pass. Again thanks for all the info and replies.

If it's a 2002 auto, it's not a HO. In 2002, the auto (47RE) was only available with the SO Cummins. Still could be a good find. My SO Cummins Rams did a fine job of towing our 5th wheel.
