Here are some photos we took of the Trans Labrador hwy from
Blanc Sablon up the Labrador coast to Cartwright then the ferry ride then across central Labrador to Labrador city and then down to
Baie-Comeau Quebec.
The trip took 2 weeks and covered about 1060 miles of gravel road.
The people along the road were great! The black flys were horrible
to the point one had to have full body net suit (then they still got you).
A vast beautiful land with not many people!

Nice slide show. We did the trip in 1998 (3 rigs) before the new improved road was done all the way. We went the opposite direction and the ferry went from Goose Bay all the way down, only pausing at Cartwright. We had a 33' fifth wheel and a Ford four door dually, the ferry guys thought we couldn't turn around inside, so we were first in...BACKING UP the whole length of the ramp and ship! Great trip...kinda like Alaska in the 6o's I would guess. Very nice folks.

The Trans Labrador Highway will be complete in 2009. It will be paved, but I'm not sure when.
& Quebec is working on extending the road along the North Shore of the St. Lawrence. I have dreams of a circuit.

We were on the 13 1/2 hour ferry with many workers on the Hwy extension and they said " Don't count on 2009 " They said they were running into many big problems and one of them was the pay was about 1/2 that of other construction projects. They said 2012 was more realistic! Time will tell

That's interesting PK. Politicians are still saying 2009.
The commitment for $ for paving came through from current Federal government since last summer.
To be sure, many parts remain to be connected, but this at the point where you turn to go to Cartwright and was taken in July, 2006.

It's the same route I took the year before.

The map is larger in my album.
Take your time, talk to locals, they can make many suggestions. If you can pick places with lots of breezes for boondocking. That makes the difference between flies and no flies.
& yes, I posted this on the backroads thread earlier.

This site is a little dated, but still works, I just tried it. Some great pictures and good links. When we arrived in 98 in our three rig caravan, folks said they had never seen three rigs at one time traveling the road. The hydro sites are great tours, plan on boondocking, plan on long conversations with locals, don't miss Fermont (unique). If you decide to do it you will be one of few, and will really feel like a pioneer.

As Little Kopit says the flys are not too bad if their is a wind blowing. One day when we were at Red Bay the breeze was great and we went for a 4 mile walk at about the end of the trail 4 miles from the truck the breeze quit and out came the little buggers very hungry! Of course our bug suits were back in the truck and we were eaten alive before we got back.
Even with the bug suits you have to figure how to get back inside the truck with 500 or so of the things swarming all around your head. We kept a big towel in the back of the truck and would swish it around our heads then jump into the truck and kill the 10 or so that got in with us resulting in little squashed flys all over the inside of our windshield.
The flys were bad even on the upper end of Newfoundland but they were horrible in all of Labrador!! The flys really spoiled that part of the trip for us.
