We are traveling to Glacier N.P. in Montana this July 3rd. Planned on ST. Mary's KOA instead of West Glacier KOA. Are there any RVers that can comment on this. We have a Class C and would like to spend time seeing and photographing Wild life and short Hikes with the kids. How is St. Mary's campground? Any input would be great. thanks
Is it a desolate area which it appears to be?

I just searched this forum for West Glacier KOA and got 14 responses. I'll be there next August and will also be interested in responses. I lean toward St. Mary's because Trailer Life rates them at 8/8.5/9 which is pretty high.

We've stayed at St Mary KOA twice, primarily because of its location. Johnson's RV park in St Mary is also good, but somewhat tighter for big rigs. Also, it's on top of the hill, there can be hard winds at times. I prefer the St Mary side, rather that the west side, because it is more convenient to Many Glacier Valley, Two Medicine Valley and Waterton Lakes NP in Canada.

We have been to Glacier several times and have stayed at the KOA at St. Mary. Have looked at Johnson's and felt the KOA was better. When we were there late last July they were just finishing up the great new pool - one of the best I have seen at any RV park anyplace - and hot tub. We will be back - God willing - to Glacier again in 2009 and will stay at the KOA again; we like the east side better.

We had plenty of room at the KOA with a 40' DP and toad. It's less than 5 minutes from the east entrance to the Park and the start of the Going to the Sun Road.
We had a wild horse grazing in the CG one night, and deer on the road going in. Though we didn't see bears at the CG, they are definitely nearby. There aren't a lot of trees in the CG. Great for satellite, not so good for shade. The roads and sites are gravel, but well packed and solid.

We stayed at ST.Mary's KOA a few years ago. We rate it high. It is rustic, gravel, but level. Definitely not desolate, but East Glacier is more rugged and in my mind for scenic than West Glacier. Your a short distance from the park entrance. The lodge has an excellent restaurant. College students from around the country serve as staff during the short tourist season. A good place to eat and have some excellent conversations. If you can take a day trip north to Waterton, on the Canadian side of the park. Spectacular. The road to the Sun drive is also a must see. If your without toad, the red buses travel regularly through and around the park. They are a good way to see the scenes. Your going to love it. Happy Trails.

We are leaving Florida July 20th and heading straight to Glacier as we only have 3 weeks. I am not sure how long it will take us so I don't want to make reservations. We would like to stay on the East side at the KOA or Johnsons. Do you think we will be ok without reservations? Thanks.

just returned from Glacier this past summer. We stayed at both sides.Campgrounds on the west are much nicer. Close to entrance and McDonald lake. I would suggest you consider both. Don't miss the Indian Pow Wow in Browning the 3rd week of July.

I planned on 5 days to get there going north on I75 thru Tennessee and then taking 70 across to Denver. Go north in Denver thru Billings and making the fourth night in Billings, Montana before St. Mary's KOA.
