I'll be buggy but otherwise fine. I suggest Mackinaw Mill Creek CG near Mackinaw City. Don't forget to take the passenger ferry out to Mackinaw island for a day visit....

If you want to use a Mackinaw area CG as a base for exploring parts of the UP, you may want to consider staying north of the bridge, in St. Ignace. There's a KOA there that is decent, and Straits SP (elec hookups only). Both good places to camp.

take a jacket, may can still be quite cool up there, I wouldn't plan on doing any swimming. On the plus side it will be before the season starts up there so it should not be very crowded and you could have your pick of campsites w/o needing reservations.

We stayed at Macinaw 2 years ago and could not wait to leave . Very tight sights and very busy place. We could not even open our awning!!!!! And the fire pits were tin lids about 18" diam. with the camp sight behind us just feet from our rig. But the view over the water was nice . No swimming beach either. A very rocky shore line.

Mackinaw Mill is a good place to stay if you get one of the new extra large sites. As for the weather, we went last July and it was very chilly.

We stayed last summer at Wilderness SP west of Mackinaw. Electric, some beach sites. Upper unit is more spacious/larger sites. About 10 miles out of town. Also stayed at Straits SP (before refurbishment). We prefer staying in UP. Less crowded. Great view of bridge from lookout & beach.

Oh boy! After reading comments here, if it is chilly in mid May, what is it like 3rd week of April? Keep in mind that I live in a place where it NEVER goes below 50! We are planning on staying at Wilderness SP for a few days & doing the Mackinac Island one day.

Wilderness State Park CG is great but the warm season at the Straits begins in mid June. This is because the entire State of Michigan area is surrounded by large deep bodies of fresh clear potable water that have gone thru an icy cold Winter. Especially, at the Straits area and the U.P. of Michigan. This cold water shifts their local (Straits) warm Summer months climate to about 6 weeks later in the year which in turn shifts the Fall cooling about 6 weeks later towards the coming Winter season. Much of that same season shift happens where we live also. Bugs are not present until true warming has occurred and then they are only spotty in most areas. There is a short black fly season at the Straits in Summer and of course, there can be mosquitoes in the wooded areas like most anywhere else in the nation or Canada/Alaska. We're in Florida visiting my Brother presently and if you want to see mosquitoes, come on down! Some evenings they will carry you away! This past summer at home in Michigan, DW and I only swatted one mosquito all Summer long. Some years there's a lot more but they don't carry malaria etc here.
We've lived on the Lake Michigan shore in West Michigan for 66 years and and know the profound effects of the huge body of deep water and the season differences. Lake Michigan alone is 100 miles wide, 340 miles long, and 923 feet deep. That's only one of the 5 Great Lakes and with Lake Superior being 2 times the water volume of Lake Michigan, it even has a greater seasonal lake effect. Hence, Michigan has a slow Spring warm up season and a very late Fall into Winter cool down season. The common term used here is that: "the 'Lake' takes most of the Summer to warm up and most of the Winter to cool off". At the Straits you can expect around 50 degrees in late April and the 60's in May generally. It's usually still in the 60's in mid to late October while the inland areas of the Wisconsin side at that latitude will be in the 50's or lower. The wind blowing across the warmed water keeps the land warm for quite a ways inland in Fall and 1/2 the Winter and cold water keeps the lands cooler near the Lake in Spring and early Summer. Prevailing winds are from West to East so it drastically influences the land temps for 15-40 miles inland from the shoreline. Our Winters only begin after Lake Michigan has cooled to below 36 degrees which is usually in February. The Great Lakes shipping season here closes on January 31st and reopens on April 1st or 15th depending on ice conditions.
Mackinac Island and the Straits area are a wonderful worthy place to visit but I WOULD suggest June thru September for the best warm time.
