Hi All,
While I was replacing my electric powered door step today I encountered a strange problem and I'm hoping the mechanics on the forum can help me out.
My problem is now the door step retracts when I open the door but extend when I close the door. Could I have plug some thing backwards? The power plug is keyed, so it only goes in one way. I tried reverse the sensor wires that didn't make any difference.
BTW, I am using the original door sensor and that is the only apparatus I did not replace, do you think that matters?
It is a Kwikee single step
TIA Steve

My guess is that the original step used a normally closed switch and the new ones expect a normally open one (or vice versa). I seem to recall reading somewhere that Kwikee made a change like that.

I remember the same thing that Chris does. I'll bet Brett will chime in here soon with the right answer.

When I had to have my step replaced last year, the tech had to replace the sensor in the door. He said it was different than the old one.

Replace your door sensor, like others have said Kwikee did change the door sensor in the mid 90's (I belive).

On most RV's there is a switch in the door frame, it is a "magnetic Reed Switch" and the magnet is on the door itself.
Now these come in two flavors, Normally open, and normally closed
your old steps used one flavor, and your new steps... The other
You need to change the door switch, to the one that came with the new steps,
That is all

you have probably got the red and yellow wires reversed. go back to the instructions and follow the wireing diagram all the way thru. I do stuff like this all the time.
good luck.

don't pull your hair out, it's fairly simple. two wires going into motor, one yellow, one red. If you reverse the wires, the motor will run backwards, if you hook red to red, yellow to yellow, it will run in the other direction.

I go with the wire. It's a DC motor and the + - is what controls the motor. Reverse the wires and it should work fine.

The problem with reversing the wires is that the current Kwikee systems have a "Override" switch, not a power switch. If you reverse the wires, the override will lock the steps in the "RETRACTED" position when you park, not useful
Also the ignition interlock won't work. if the steps are extended and for some reason the door does not close properly
So replace the door switch and then everything should work as designed
