I think that the length of your relationship with Direct and the level of service will have an effect on the cost of support and service. My 3 yr. old HD DVR frailed in December and they overnited a rebuilt unit to me at no charge. I could have had a new one for $200.00 but opted for the rebuilt model.

I have called them many times for technical support and have never been charged anything for the on line or telephone support.

I have 5 receivers including including the one in my motor home and spend $139.00 per month for subscriptions. My only complaint about Direct is they will not help me get the Distant network service for the motor home.

Good luck

I would not go with any extended protection plans. I have had DirecTV for about 10 years and just recently had my 1st problem. My 14 month old DVR unit hard drive started acting up and reformatting did not fix the problem. I called customer service and they shipped a new unit with a small charge of 19.95. Small price to pay for 10 years of trouble free service. Once you are an established customer for more than 2 years they will upgrade most receivers for free and even send out an installer. They have treated me well and appear to want to keep my business.

Point is that they want me to pay to service the equiptment that I am renting from them. I DO NOT OWN THE EQUPTMENT THEY DO.

What is your point? It sounds like a pretty standard extended service plan to me.

FYI we have had two receivers with DirecTV for about 10 years and have never had a failure or needed service.

You own it after a 2 year commitment.

I had trouble with them.....

I had a receiver go bad. They told me no problem, sent me another, I sent my old one back. I found a better deal with Dish 9 months later. I called to cancel my Directv service and they said that with my new receiver, I committed to a year long service commitment and that it would cost me $105 to cancel. I fought it and got them to cancel without the fee because I was never told of this policy nor did I sign anything. I sent back all my equipment and then I got a call a few weeks later saying they didn't receive it. Luckily, I kept the FedEx tracking info. and passed that on to them. They miraculously found the equipment I sent back right after that.

If I was a betting man, I'd say they were just trying to make some money from me after being a loyal customer for 5 years. That's not right.

Just for a little humor I had this happen last week. Kind of related in that it deals with "Company owned equipment".

Put the trash can by the road Monday night. Tuesday morning it's gone. Called WM and they told DW we were responsible for the can and owed them $65. Only 2 real choices for what happened. 1) Early morning trash can thief. 2) truck driver dropped it in the truck.

They said they would search the dump for it but if they didn't find it I had to pay. Yeah right. Next day got the same story. About 2 supervisors later they decided to replace the can at no charge.

I beleive that you are wrong. After July of 2006 any new receiver is leased and the length of the commitment has no bearing on that. All the two years means is that after two years you can quit without paying an early termination fee. You still must return the equipment to Directv. An advantage to the Protection Plan can be if the receiver fails. Without the Plan assume your DVR fails after 18 months and you purchase a new one. As soon as you activate it your commitment automatically extends for an additional 2 years. If you have the protection plan sometimes you can argue with the CSR and get that extention removed. That generally requires talking to a supervisor because the first line CSR's computer automatically adds the two year commitment. In any case after 2 years or ten years it makes no difference they can ask for it back. Directv Customer agreement
Directv Lease Addendum Everyone should read the agreements linked above.

Maybe they still own it but in my recent experience with DirecTV on replacing several receivers, they did not want the old ones back. Told me I could do whatever I wanted to do with them. Sold them and the de-activated cards at a swap meet along with a dish.

This was not the case with the DVR unit. They included a postage paid label and wanted the defective one shipped within 7 days. And you do have to commit to 2 more years of service which was not a problem since I have had them for 10 years already.

Everything is negotiable, depending on how long you may have had service. You just have to speak to the right person.

We have found Direct TV much easier to deal with. We sold our home and moved into our MH. We are taking delivery of our park trailer tomorrow and when I called Direct TV to tell them what we were doing thay we very accomodating and set up the move to our tripod set up behind the trailer and continue with the MH set up as is. No problems at all.
