Drove almost 100 miles this morning to look at a '06 Jayco Eagle. Pulled into this guys yard and before he says hello, he says I hope you are not planning on towing with that truck, it's too short. Well I have a 2001 F250 super cab short box, wheelbase is 142". He went on to say he used to have an'02 F250 identical truck. Made one trip towing the 5th wheel and everytime he slowed down the trailer pushed the rear end of the truck around. He then traded for an '04 F350 DRW, crewcab long box, and no more trailer pushing the truck around. I've only heard of this with TT's not a 5th wheel. I've seen trucks like mine towing 5th wheels before, is this an issue I need be concerned about or was he just ????

Your truck is fine. I tow with a 2001 F250 SD quad cab short box. All you really need is a slider hitch and you really don't even need that, if you're cautious, but I'd recommend it. Is he trying to sell you a truck too or what?.
By the way, if his trailer was pushing the rear of his truck around, then he didnt have the trailer brakes adjusted right (if at all).....

How long and heavy is the fifth wheel you're looking at? There are lots of people who pull fifth wheels with a short bed truck. You will, of course, want a slider hitch so the front of the fifth wheel doesn't make contact with the cab on tight turns. Unless the weight of the fifth wheel (I'd look at the GVWR, not the dry weight) is too much for your 3/4-ton truck, you shouldn't have a problem.

I totally forgot to ask that. I'm glad someone is thinking today because I'm sure not. I was just assuming (I know) that the 5er was the right weight for the truck.....

Any fairly heavy trailer will push any truck if the brakes are not used or are maladjusted. A properly set-up 3/4 ton Ford should be able to handle a good size trailer. You may want a slider hitch. Get the trailer specs and then ask again.

Sounds like like he had a time based brake controller, or maybe it was maladjusted. Get a Prodigy brake controller for yours.

Your truck will do fine. I do recommend a slider hitch for short beds.

I agree with the others, as long as it was not a huge 5er, he must not of had his brakes set up right. Even with a huge 5er the brakes should stop it. Maybe he felt nervous with it, and it did not stop as quick as he thought it should. Also, maybe he has a F-250 with a V-8 and a low tow rating. Friends of ours bought a 250 like that and were told it could tow 12,500lbs. Turns out that one was only rated for 7200lbs. Good Luck.

There is no DOUBT your truck WILL tow the trailer but the question you should be asking is SHOULD I tow with it? Check the weight of your truck and see if you can ADD an additional (GVWR of the trailer X .20) and still be below the trucks GVWR.

I understand the need for the slider hitch and had planned on one when we buy. Never thought about it being the lack of trailer brakes but that makes sense. Got so many numbers in my head right now I can't remember the specs on the trailer but I do know I'm well within the GCWR and GVWR for my TV. Not 100% sure about the rear GAWR. I need to get to a weigh scales to be sure the pin weight isn't too high. Thanks for your input.
PS> Why when you add the FT GAWR & the R GAWR does it exceed the GVWR? In my case, by more than #1000.
